Happy New Year: Traffic restrictions, check on drunk driving In Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and other cities

The police will provide extra security at 35 major celebration venues, including malls, motels, and cinemas. Hauz Khas, a popular party hub, and eight prominent hotels will also see increased vigilance.

The countdown to 2025 has started, and cities across the nation are preparing for grand New Year celebrations. To manage the expected large crowds, police have put extensive security measures in place, especially at popular celebration spots. Special attention will be given to preventing drink-driving and maintaining public safety. The Delhi Police have made strict security arrangements for New Year’s Eve, with nearly 20,000 personnel, including police and paramilitary forces, deployed to maintain order. Security has also been tightened at Delhi’s borders as people from nearby states are expected to join the celebrations.

Traffic regulations and restrictions in Delhi

Connaught Place: From 8 PM on December 31, restrictions will be in effect for both private and public vehicles.
Public Transport: Buses heading towards Connaught Place will be rerouted from 7 PM, and the exit gates of Rajiv Chowk Metro Station will be closed after 9 PM to avoid overcrowding.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla shared that large gatherings are expected in clubs, restaurants, malls, parks, and popular hotels. Special arrangements will be made for Connaught Place/Connaught Circus, Khan Market, five-star hotels, including The Lalit, Imperial, Park, Royal Plaza, Shangri-La, Le Meridien, Taj Mahal, Taj Vivanta, Metropolitan, Claridges, Ashoka, Samrat, ITC Maurya, and Taj Palace, India Gate, ‘C’ Hexagon and Kartavya Path, temples and gurudwaras.

Special Security Measures:

Emergency Services: Ambulances, fire tenders, and bomb disposal squads will be stationed at key locations.
Patrolling and Monitoring: Teams equipped with metal detectors, SWAT units, and motorcycle patrols will be active. Foot-patrolling teams and plain-clothes officers will monitor the crowds.
Vehicle Checks: Over 30 vehicle-checking units will be deployed, and 47 pickets have been set up to divert traffic around Connaught Place.

Strict action will be taken against drink-driving, overspeeding, stunt biking, and reckless driving. Medical professionals and excise inspectors will be available to handle violations related to alcohol and other regulations.

India Gate traffic restrictions

Due to the expected heavy pedestrian movement, vehicles may be diverted from the following points: Q-Point, R/A MLNP, R/A Sunheri Masjid, R/A Mar-Janpath, Rajpath Rafi Marg, R/A Windsor Place, R/A Rajindra Prasad Road-Janpath, KG Marg-Ferozshah Road, R/A Mandi House, W-Point, Mathura Road-Purana Qila Road, Mathura Road-Sher Shah Road, SBM-Zakir Hussain Marg, SBM-Pandara Road.

Delhi metro restrictions

To ensure public safety on New Year’s Eve, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that passengers will not be allowed to exit from Rajiv Chowk metro station after 9 PM. However, entry into the station will remain open.

Additionally, starting at 8 PM, QR tickets for Rajiv Chowk station will not be available through the DMRC mobile app to help implement these measures smoothly.

Metro services on the rest of the network will continue to operate as per the regular schedule.

Drunk-driving in Gurugram

In Gurugram, over 80 traffic police officers will be stationed at various checkpoints on New Year’s Eve to prevent drink-driving. According to PTI, senior police officials stated that special checkpoints will be set up at eight key locations to strictly enforce anti-drink-driving rules.

The deployment will include eight traffic inspectors, 16 zonal officers, eight road safety officers, and 50 additional personnel.

Strict action will be taken against those found driving under the influence of alcohol under the Motor Vehicle Act, said Vij.
