However, after tremendous uproar from all quarters, including Manu Bhaker’s father Ram Kishan Bhaker, on social media the Sports Ministry have bowed down and awarded India’s highest sporting honour to the Indian shooter who won two medals at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The National Sports Awards distribution will take place at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on January 17, the MYAS release stated.

The 22-year-old Bhaker became independent India’s first athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics with her bronze-winning show in the 10m air pistol individual and 10m air pistol mixed team events in August.

In the same Games, Hamranpreet led the Indian hockey team to its second consecutive bronze medal. The 18-year-old Gukesh, on the other hand, became the youngest ever World champion while also helping the Indian team win a historic gold in the Chess Olympiad last year.

The fourth recipient will be para high-jumper Praveen, who was crowned the T64 champion in the Paris Paralympics. The T64 classification is for athletes who have one or both legs missing below the knee and rely on a prosthetic leg for running.

“The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organised function at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17th January, 2025 (Friday) at 1100 hours,” the sports ministry said in a press release.

2024 being the Olympics year, 32 athletes were awarded the Arjuna awards which include other Paris Games medallists like Aman Sehrawat, Swapnil Kusale and Sarabjot Singh.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir walked out to face the media on the eve of the SCG Test on Friday. Gambhir refused to reveal the final playing 11 of the Indian side even when he was asked whether captain Rohit Sharma will be available for the game.

“We will take Playing XI call after looking at pitch tomorrow,” Gambhir said when asked if Rohit Sharma will be part of team for SCG Test.

Gambhir, however, confirmed that pacer Akash Deep has been ruled out of the final Test due to a stiff back. Bengal and Lucknow Super Giants pacer Akash had taken five wickets from two Tests in Brisbane and Melbourne so far. He was a bit unlucky to not get more as multiple catches were dropped off his bowling during the two games.

“Akash Deep is out with back issue,” India coach Gautam Gambhir said in the pre-match press conference in Sydney.

Gambhir said the playing XI would be decided after taking a look at the pitch. The 28-year-old right-arm pacer bowled a total of 87.5 overs across two Test matches and his niggle could be a result of the heavier than usual workload he has endured.

Either Harshit Rana or Prasidh Krishna could make it to the eleven in place of Akash.

Australia to hand debut to Beau Webster, drop Mitchell Marsh

Pat Cummins-led Australia have also made a big change for the crucial fifth Test at the SCG. Out-of-form all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been dropped and will be replaced by debutant Beau Webster.

The Tasmanian youngster has been viewed as a better option at No. 6 in the order in place of Marsh. Webster has averaged 57.10 in first-class cricket since March 2022, while also picking up 81 wickets at 31.70.

“Mitchy obviously hasn’t quite got the runs, and perhaps wickets this series,” Cummins told reporters on Thursday. “So we felt like it was time for a freshen up and Beau’s been great.

“It’s a shame for Mitchy, because we know how much he brings to the team, but feel like now it’s a good week for Beau to get a chance,” Cummins added.

The former India opener didn’t hold back when asked about the news report leaking dressing room conversations. “Debates between a player and a coach should stay between them – any conversations in the dressing room should stay in the dressing room,” Gambhir said.

“Indian cricket will be in safe hands till honest people stay in the dressing room. Only thing that keeps you in the dressing room is performance,” he added.

“There were honest words and honesty is important,” he asserted.

Gambhir also said he did not have any discussion with senior batter Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma except for strategies on how to win the Test matches. “Every individual knows what are areas to work on. We have only had one conversation with them (and that is) how to win Test matches,” he said.

This will not be the first time that an Indian captain has walked away from international cricket in the middle of a Test series. Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket back in 2014 to hand over the reigns to Virat Kohli.

On the talk show, Dhoni also revealed why he would never take former India and Chennai Super Kings teammate Suresh Raina as a bike-riding partner.

“In the sense, you know, to put it very simply, in a motorcycle, unlike a car, you know, whether it’s your fault or not, if there’s an accident or if you fall, you will get hurt and most of the athletes, they are very worried about their joints, especially knees and elbows,” Dhoni said.

“Most of the players, they stay away from it. But people who have sat with me on a bike and we have been on a ride, I can pick one who I would not, you know, take as a companion and that would be Suresh Raina because, you know, he starts moving. So, if he sees a truck, you know, getting close, he starts to move along,” the CSK wicketkeeper added.

Dhoni has taken a massive pay-cut to play for CSK in the IPL 2025 season. The former India wicketkeeper was retained for just Rs 4 crore by CSK as an ‘uncapped’ player ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Rohit and Kohli have already retired from international T20 cricket earlier this year after the T20 World Cup 2024 but the selectors are planning to rest the three senior India cricketers keeping ‘workload management’ in mind.

Rohit and Kohli featured in just three ODI matches in 2024 – all against Sri Lanka – which India went on to lose 2-0 and one match ended in a tie.

With the Champions Trophy 2025 on the horizon, it would be more practical for the batting duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to make themselves available for the three-match ODI series against England. The series would offer valuable preparation for the mega event. Currently, Rohit, Virat, and Bumrah are in Australia, participating in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). While the batting duo has struggled to find form, the Indian speedster has been carrying the side on his shoulders, claiming 30 wickets across four Test matches.

The Champions Trophy 2025 is set to begin on February 19 and will follow a hybrid model. All India-centric matches, as well as the semifinals, will be held in Dubai. Should India reach the final, it too will take place in Dubai. India’s campaign will commence on February 20 against Bangladesh, followed by a high-stakes clash with arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23.

The ICC has divided the participating teams into two groups. Group A consists of defending Champions Trophy holders and hosts Pakistan, along with India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Group B includes 2023 Cricket World Cup champions Australia, Afghanistan, England, and South Africa.

As the Champions Trophy approaches, the ODI series against England could serve as an ideal platform for Rohit and Virat to regain their rhythm and for the team to fine-tune its preparations ahead of the highly anticipated tournament.

The year 2025 may well be the year of massive changes in Indian cricket which will unfold as the year wears on. The Indian cricket team will have an action-packed 2025 season starting with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in February.

But before India heads to Dubai for the ICC event, they will take on former world champions England in 5 T20I matches and 3 ODI game starting on January 22 at home. It will, of course, be followed by the Champions Trophy – which is hosted by Pakistan but India are going to play all their matches at a neutral venue in Dubai.

Once the Champions Trophy gets over on March 9, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will get underway from the middle of March. The World Test Championships 2025 Final is scheduled to take place at Lord’s in June but India are far from qualifying for the title clash.

The Indian will begin a five-match Test series against hosts England on June 20th. It will be India’s first Test match after the New Year’s Test match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) this Friday (January 3).

After the tour of England ends in August 2025, India will head to Bangladesh for a limited-overs series featuring 3 ODIs and 3 T20I matches. India are then set to host the Asia Cup 2025 tournament at home which is scheduled to take place from September 2025. It will be interesting to see where Pakistan’s matches will take place, since they have also refused to tour India for an cricket matches.

West Indies will then tour India for two Test matches in the month of October 2025 followed by India’s return to Australia for a limited-overs series featuring 3 ODI and 5 T20I games in October and November 2025.

The year will end with South Africa’s tour of India in November and December 2025 but the final schedule of the tour is yet to be announced by the BCCI and Cricket South Africa.

However, it was Head’s crucial breakthrough with the ball in hand, which turned the Test in Australia’s favour after Indian batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant had battled hard and kept the home side at bay for the entire second session on Day 5 on Monday. Head dismissed Pant to end a 88-run stand for the 4th wicket soon after the Tea break on the final day.

Head’s dismissal of Pant (30) came from an innocuous half-tracker, which the Indian wicketkeeper-batter hit straight to the deep mid-wicket fielder. Former India cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed outrage over the celebration, labeling it ‘obnoxious’ and a poor example for the sport. Calling it an insult to 1.5 billion Indians, Sidhu demanded stringent action to prevent similar behaviour in the future.

Australian captain Pat Cummins, however, dismissed the controversy, explaining that Head’s celebration was a lighthearted inside joke. “I can explain that. His finger is so hot he’s going to put it in a cup of ice—that’s the running joke. I think it’s very funny. It’s something he’s done before after taking a wicket,” Cummins clarified during the post-match press conference after Australia’s 184-run victory, which gave them a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Pant’s dismissal triggered India’s collapse, with the team crumbling to 155 all out in pursuit of 340. Barring Yashasvi Jaiswal (84) and Pant, none of the Indian batters managed to contribute significantly, allowing Australia to seize a commanding position heading into the final Test.

The final name on the list for the coveted accolade is Australia all-rounder Travis Head. The top ranked Men’s T20I batter will be aiming to go one better than his nomination in the same category last year, after hitting almost 1,400 runs across all formats with trademark flair.

The Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year sees Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapathu and South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt nominated in their third category, after both captains were honoured on the ODI and T20I shortlists on Sunday. Athapaththu was an inspirational leader for Sri Lanka, hitting over 1,100 runs during the year across formats, taking 30 wickets and famously guiding her team to an historic first Asia Cup success in front of their home crowd.

Leading batter in the ICC Women’s ODI Batter Rankings, Wolvaardt was at her sublime best in 2024, scoring over 1,500 runs in all formats, and led from the front as South Africa reached their second successive Women’s T20 World Cup final in the UAE.

Amelia Kerr was the principal architect of South Africa’s defeat in that final, and she is among the nominees for the Heyhoe Flint Trophy after another stellar year with bat and ball in which she hit 651 runs and took 43 wickets, not to mention her starring role in a record-breaking campaign as Player of the Tournament at the Women’s T20WC.

The final name in contention is Australia’s Annabel Sutherland. The 23-year-old wowed during a breakthrough year, hitting the fastest ever double-century in women’s Tests against South Africa in February and recording Player of the Series accolades in notable victories over India and New Zealand at the latter end of the year. She ends the year with 615 runs and 37 wickets.

Finally, the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year shortlist features a dazzling quartet, three of whom have been honoured on the shortlist for the Sobers Trophy.

Harry Brook hit 1,100 Test runs during the calendar year at an average of 55.00, and four centuries, including an unforgettable triple-hundred in England’s opening victory over Pakistan in Multan back in October. He shared a 454-run stand with Joe Root in that match, and his teammate celebrates back-to-back nominations in the Test category after a year in which he surpassed ICC Hall of Famer Sir Alastair Cook to become England’s all-time highest run-scorer in the longest format and seized back the number one spot in the ICC Men’s Test Batter Rankings.

Bumrah is the lone bowler shortlisted with a sterling 71 wickets in Tests in 2024 – the highest of any bowler, at an average of 14.92. With electric spells coming against South Africa, England and Australia among his highlights, the top-ranked Test bowler spearheaded India’s attack with relentless pace, accuracy and threat.

Completing the lineup is Sri Lanka’s record-breaking batter Kamindu Mendis, who ends a breakthrough year with 1,049 runs at a phenomenal average of 74.92, and during which the 26-year-old also became the first batter to hit a half-century in each of his first eight Tests and the fastest batter in 75 years to reach 1,000 Test runs.

The ICC Awards 2024 comprises 12 individual awards, with shortlists in nine categories having been revealed by the ICC between 28 and 30 December. Shortlists were drawn up by a specialist panel of cricket writers and broadcasters, who selected the nominees according to on-field performances and overall achievements in international cricket throughout the calendar year.

Virat Kohli once again edged an outgoing delivery off Mitchell Starc to fall for 5 and India were reduced to 33 for 3 at lunch on Day 5. But Jaiswal and Pant put on 88 runs for the 4th wicket to keep Australians at bay in the second session.

Pant departed to a horror shot after Tea, skiing a catch to Mitchell Marsh off Travis Head. Jaiswal was caught behind off his glove in a rather controversial fashion off Pat Cummins for 84 off 208 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy departed for 2 and 1` respectively and at 130 for 6 in the final session, it was almost game over for India.

In the 71st over, skipper Pat Cummins got rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal in a controversial manner. Jaiswal tried to go for a pull shot against Cummins’ short ball delivery but missed it. Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey didn’t make a mistake to catch. The on field umpire’s original decision was not out, however, the Australian skipper didn’t waste time to take the DRS.

In the replay, third umpire Sharfuddoula checked the Snickometer where there was no spike but the visuals showed the ball hit Jaiswal’s bottom glove and then went to the keeper. The third umpire went with the visual evidence and overturned the original decision. Yashasvi walked back to the pavillion after scoring 84 runs from 208 balls, with India’s hope of drawing the match deemed away. The decision drew huge jeers from the Indian fans in the crowd with some of them chanting, ‘Cheater-Cheater’.

Akash Deep and Washington Sundar on the crease kept rotating the strike and slowly added runs. However, the Aussie set an attacking field aiming to clinch a win. In the 77th over, Scott Boland struck again as he dismissed Akash Deep for seven runs. India were 150 for 8 after the end of the 77th over.

The Kiwis were 65 for 5 at one stage while batting first but a century partnership between all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell took them to a competitive 172 for 8. In reply, Sri Lanka were cruising to a win and were 121 for no loss in their chase led by opener Pathum Nissanka’s 90 but Jacob Duffy’s triple strike derailed the Lankan chase.

Charith Asalanka’s side failed to chase down 14 runs to win in the final over and ultimately losing a game, they should have won. It was New Zealand’s second successive win over the Lankans in T20I cricket after a win by 5 runs last month to level a two-match series at 1-1 in Sri Lanka. Monday could be the final time that the world has seen both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Test cricket. Rohit has had a disastrous 2024 in Test cricket, scoring only 164 runs at an average of 11 and things didn’t get better on the final day of the Boxing Day Test on Monday. The Indian skipper was dismissed for 9 off 40 balls and has only 31 runs in 5 innings so far in this series after missing the first Test in Perth due to the birth of his second child.

Kohli’s woes of balls outside the off stump continued as he fell for just 5 off 29 balls, chasing another wide ball off Mitchell Starc to depart just before lunch on Day 5.

Former India skipper Kohli now has only 167 runs in 7 innings, with 100 of those coming in one innings – the second innings at Perth last month. While former India head coach Ravi Shastri might believe that Kohli has got a few years left in him as a Test batter, the patience of Indian selectors might be running thin.

According to a report from PTI news agency, Indian chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar is in Melbourne right now and it is possible that they will have a conversation about Rohit’s future in Test cricket soon. The report added that Rohit will step down if India fail to qualify for the WTC final in this cycle.

At lunch on the fifth day, India were struggling at 33 for 3 in 26.1 overs, still needing another 307 runs to win this Test or survive 60 overs to draw this game.

Sri Lanka will be led by Charith Asalanka and has a good mix of experienced players with all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga returning to the side after recovering from injury. The side also features T20 specialists like Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana.

The Lankan batting also looks impressive with Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis at the top of the order. New Zealand, on the other hand, are looking to bounce back from 2-1 loss in Test series against England.

The Indian batter got away with a fine of 20 per cent of his match fees and one ‘demerit’ point to his record even as many former Australian players including Ricky Ponting felt that Kohli should have been banned for the Sydney Test.

On Day 2 of the fourth Test at the MCG, it was inevitable that the Australian crowd would be against Kohli. After first spitting at the crowd, in India’s bowling innings, Kohli lost his cool again while returning to the pavilion after being dismissed for 36 in the first innings of he game.

In a video which went viral on social media, Kohli is seen stopping near the tunnel leading up to the dressing room and tried to confront the fans booing him before being led away.

Kohli looked very solid for the majority of his innings before being involved in a horrible mix-up which resulted in the run-out of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was batting brilliantly on 82. Kohli and Jaiswal had put on over 100 runs for the third wicket by then and were well on their way to getting their team on top after losing the early wickets of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.

But Jaiswal’s run-out seemed to have disturbed Kohli, who till then had avoided the temptation of playing at deliveries outside his off-stump. But just before the close of play, Kohli once again fell to his weakness – the delivery well outside his off-stump – caught behind off the bowling of Scott Boland.

Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s wife Sanjana Ganesan reacted to the video and spoke out in support of Kohli. “Really disrespectful behavior with country’s best batter. Criticism is ok, but abuse crosses the line. Upholding the spirit of cricket and supporting our players with dignity,” Sanjana Ganesan tweeted.

Kohli and Jaiswal’s late dismissal meant that India had frittered away all the good work of the final session and are once again staring at a heavy defeat, still trailing Australia’s total of 474 by 310 runs. The Royal Challengers Bangalore batter was dismissed for 36 off 86 balls, his second-highest score in the Test series so far after his second innings hundred at Perth in the first Test.

The 52-year-old Mumbai batter was admitted in Akruti Hospital with severe urine infection and it was later revealed by his doctor that he had clots in his brain. Kambli had spiked a fever earlier this week and as a result was moved to the ICU on Tuesday.

On Friday, a video of Kambli walking with a urine bag attached supported by hospital staff and his fans went viral on social media.

Kambli has got support from Shiv Sena party and even Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, has promised to help Kambli with Rs 5 lakh financially.

Vinod Kambli will never regain his full memory

Meanwhile, Dr Vivek Dwivedi, who has been treating Kambli at the Akruti Hospital spoke to Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel giving an update on the Indian cricket star’s health. Dr Dwivedi revealed that Kambli might never be able to recover his full memory due to his brain clots.

“Yes, there is one condition. So, we call it NPH. But it will improve with the help of medicine. No surgeries are required. Neither further clots etc. Only with the help of medicine will it subside. So he will need a good rehabilitation. Rehabilitation means physiotherapy and nutritional support,” Dr Vivek Dwivedi, chief intensivist of Akruti Health City Hospital, said on Vickey Lalwani’s YouTube channel.

“He will need close monitoring. He will need rehabilitation, for which he will need money. He will need good physiotherapist twice a day, along with it he will need good nutritional support, speech therapy, there is some slurring. Rehabilitation is something which he will need. He will need good monitoring after discharge,” he added.

The doctor also said that Kambli is facing memory loss too. “Yes, there is a little bit of impairment of memory function also. Definitely, there is some impairment. Neurodegenerative changes are there. So again, with the help of time and good rehabilitation, he will probably start functioning normally again. But not like 100 per cent, but definitely he will achieve 80-90 per cent of the memory, that previous memory,” Dwivedi said.

“This happens. Earlier, he was ethanolic. Three-four months back he stopped alcohol and smoking. At that time, he was ethanolic. Sometimes, that can cause it (memory loss). At present there is complete abstinence of alcohol. There is now withdrawal symptom too.”
