As the pioneers of high-speed rail, Japan introduced the Shinkansen in 1964, operating over 3,000 kilometers today. Renowned for its advanced technology and impeccable safety record, the Shinkansen has never recorded a fatal accident. Yet, its success has been largely confined to Japan, with Taiwan being the sole international buyer. Taiwan’s High-Speed Rail operates the 700T Series, the first Shinkansen model sold outside Japan.

This limited international appeal is surprising, especially given the growing interest among developing nations in high-speed rail systems to boost transportation efficiency.

Reason for the high price tag

Experts believe that the primary reasons for this include the high costs and limited adaptability of the Shinkansen. According to reports from the Japan Times, the Shinkansen’s system is highly integrated and designed to stringent specifications that prepare for rare worst-case scenarios, making it less flexible compared to competitors’ offerings.

Japan emphasizes that the initial expense of the Shinkansen reflects its advanced technology and quality. Unlike European systems like France’s TGV, which can operate on existing tracks, the Shinkansen requires dedicated, specialized tracks. This necessitates acquiring land, significantly driving up upfront costs. However, advocates argue that the system’s long-term benefits, such as lower energy consumption and reduced wear on infrastructure due to the train’s lighter design, outweigh the higher initial investment.

“The upfront costs may seem daunting due to the superior quality of the Shinkansen,” Masafumi Shukuri, chairman of the International High-Speed Rail Association, explained in an interview. “But the focus should be on the life-cycle costs, which are significantly lower.”

Despite these advantages, the high initial price tag often deters potential buyers. The negotiation process also tends to be complex, requiring multiple high-level approvals, further hindering the Shinkansen’s international expansion.

While Japan’s bullet train remains a marvel of engineering, the challenges of cost and adaptability have left it struggling to compete on the global stage, where more flexible and cost-effective high-speed rail systems are gaining traction.

China’s high-speed rail becoming popular among interested buyers

China’s high-speed rail (HSR), though relatively new, has quickly gained popularity among buyers. Since starting operations in 2008, China has built the largest high-speed rail network in the world and runs some of the fastest trains.

China has become a strong competitor to Japan in the high-speed rail market, using its influence and financial power to expand across Asia. For example, Indonesia, which was originally considering Japan’s Shinkansen, chose China’s HSR for its high-speed rail project in 2015. This was a major setback for Japan. In 2023, Indonesia launched the first high-speed rail service in Southeast Asia.

China is also working on a second HSR project in Thailand, expected to be completed by 2028. This will connect the Laos-China railway to Bangkok and could eventually extend to Kuala Lumpur and possibly Singapore.

In January, companies from around the world bid for the project, but Japan’s East Japan Railway Co. withdrew due to financial risks.

Japan’s potential deal with India

Japan is hopeful about a potential deal with India for a high-speed rail project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, but talks have been ongoing for years without a final decision. Japan also aims to secure a contract with Australia, which is planning its own high-speed rail system.

Meanwhile, China is pushing ahead with its technology by unveiling a new high-speed train prototype, adding more competition to Japan’s bullet train.

China’s New High-Speed Train

China unveiled its new high-speed train prototype, the CR450 EMU, on December 29 in Beijing. This train is expected to exceed speeds of 400 kilometers per hour, making it the fastest high-speed train in the world.

The CR450 is the result of the CR450 Technology Innovation Project, launched in 2021 to develop trains that are safer, more eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and smarter. The China State Railway Group (China Railway) claims this train will not only be the fastest but will also reduce travel time and improve connectivity for China’s vast number of passengers.

The prototype has already set a new global standard for performance in areas like speed, energy usage, noise, and braking distance, reaching a test speed of 450 kilometers per hour. The CR450 is designed to look like an arrow and is about 10% lighter than its predecessor, the Fuxing.

The new train will be faster than the current CR400 Fuxing trains, which operate at speeds of 350 kilometers per hour. If it performs as expected, it will cut travel time between Beijing and Shanghai from 4.5 hours to just 3.3 hours.

China already has the world’s largest high-speed rail network, with 47,000 kilometers of track in use, and 2,000 kilometers were added just last year.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Tawheed Hussain, stated on Wednesday that the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is one of several matters being addressed in bilateral talks with India. Strengthening relations with the United States, India, and China remains a top priority for Bangladesh’s interim government, he added.

Sheikh Hasina, 77, has been residing in India since August 5, following massive student-led protests that led to the collapse of her 16-year-old government. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh has issued arrest warrants against Hasina, along with several former cabinet ministers, advisors, and civilian and military officials, for alleged “crimes against humanity and genocide.”

Balancing diplomacy and domestic stability

In response to a question about Hasina’s extradition, Hussain said, “This [extradition] is one of the issues, but there are other matters of mutual interest that we are working on simultaneously.” He emphasized that efforts to bring Hasina back and improve relations with India would progress in parallel. “I believe both objectives can advance simultaneously,” he said.

Hussain, a former diplomat and now the de facto foreign minister under Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, highlighted that resolving the Rohingya crisis and fostering strong bilateral ties with the U.S., India, and China would remain key priorities for Bangladesh in 2025.

“Our priorities are to resolve the Rohingya crisis, maintain strong relationships with these three nations, and further our economic and diplomatic efforts while ensuring stability,” he explained.

Equal focus on key global powers

When asked if Bangladesh prioritizes one country over another among the U.S., India, and China, Hussain clarified that all three are equally important. “None of these nations are at the bottom of our priority list,” he said. “Maintaining strong ties with all three is vital as our diverse interests are deeply intertwined with them.” Hussain also acknowledged that these countries have vested interests in maintaining good relations with Bangladesh.

Extradition request sent to India

The interim government recently sent a diplomatic communication to New Delhi, formally requesting Hasina’s extradition. Blinkit also experienced a massive surge in demand for grapes on New Year’s Eve. By 7 PM on Tuesday, an unprecedented spike in grape orders caused the fruit to go out of stock, with the platform delivering seven times the usual quantity.

The quick commerce platform delivered approximately 2,34,512 packets of aloo bhujiya, 45,531 cans of tonic water, and nearly 7,000 packs of ice cubes. Additionally, over 1,000 lipsticks and 262 lighters were purchased by users by 8 PM that evening.

A record-breaking night for Blinkit

Albinder Dhindsa highlighted that December 31 was a landmark day for Blinkit. It recorded the highest number of orders ever received, with peak orders per minute and per hour. Additionally, delivery partners earned the highest tips that day. Blinkit reported delivering 2.3 lakh packets of aloo bhujia by 8 PM on December 31, 2024. In Hyderabad, a delivery partner received a record Rs. 2,500 as a single tip. Moreover, Blinkit saw its largest single order worth Rs. 64,988 placed from Kolkata.

For example, Slovakia and Poland have warned they might cut off Ukraine’s electricity supply.

Since 1991, Russia has supplied gas to Europe through ports and pipelines under an agreement that lasted for 30 years. But Ukraine’s decision has ended this system, leaving many European countries worried. While some countries have reduced how much gas they buy from Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, nations like Slovakia and Austria still rely heavily on it. This reliance brings Russia around USD 5.2 billion in yearly earnings.

Turmoil in Europe

Austria acknowledged the situation, stating, “We have made some preparations, but this is a major crisis. Winter is here, and challenges are inevitable. Gas prices are expected to rise unpredictably by 2025.” Meanwhile, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said that while Russia may not be significantly affected, Ukraine’s announcement will have a considerable impact on European nations.

Russian gas passes through Slovakia, which earns revenue from this transit. From there, the gas is supplied to Austria, Hungary, and Italy. With the route now blocked, Slovakia faces increased difficulties. Fico has even threatened to cut off electricity supply to Ukraine. For countries like Slovakia that still need gas from Russia, alternative routes will need to be used, which will increase costs.

On the other hand, Russia is unlikely to face substantial losses. It can continue sending gas to Hungary, Turkey, and Serbia through the TurkStream pipeline across the Black Sea.

Dependence of European Nations on Russian gas

Several European countries, including Slovakia, Austria, and Moldova, rely heavily on gas imports from Russia. While nations like the U.S. and Qatar provide some assistance, their supply falls short of meeting the full demand.

The case of Lovely Khatun, the head of Rashidabad Gram Panchayat in West Bengal, is making headlines as allegations surface claiming she is a Bangladeshi national who illegally entered India. Her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has initiated an inquiry into the matter, while the Calcutta High Court has demanded a report on the accusations.

The allegations against Lovely Khatun include forging documents such as her identity certificate and OBC status to establish her election eligibility. The petitioner claims there is evidence to prove that Khatun changed her identity, including altering her name and official records.

This comes at a time when seven people have been arrested for allegedly making passports with forged documents for Bangladesh nationals, who had illegally entered the country.

Who is Lovely Khatun?

According to a report by TV9 Bangla, Lovely Khatun’s real name is Nasia Sheikh. She, allegedly entered India without a passport and erased her previous identity. Reports suggest she changed her father’s name to Sheikh Mustafa, which is reflected in her official documents. She reportedly obtained a voter ID in 2015 and a birth certificate in 2018. However, it is claimed that her actual father’s name is Jameel Biswas.

The allegations against Khatun were brought to the Calcutta High Court by Rehana Sultana, a resident of Chanchal, who contested against Khatun in the 2022 Gram Panchayat elections but lost.

When confronted by TV9 Bangla for her response, Lovely Khatun dismissed the allegations, stating, “I am busy and cannot comment on this matter right now.” Her lack of clarification has only fueled further speculation.

Political and legal angle

An Indian Express report states that Rehana’s lawyer, Amlan Bhattacharya, claimed that Rehana contested as a TMC candidate but was defeated by Khatun, who ran as the Congress-Left alliance candidate. A month or two after winning, Khatun switched allegiance to the TMC.

Rehana has accused Khatun of being a Bangladeshi immigrant and obtaining an Aadhaar card and birth certificate using fake documents. Bhattacharya further alleged that Khatun manipulated local records to prove her eligibility for elections. It is claimed that she even approached someone in a neighboring village to pose as her father. Locals reportedly know that Khatun’s real father is Jameel Biswas, not Sheikh Mustafa, as stated in her documents. To ensure public safety on New Year’s Eve, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that passengers will not be allowed to exit from Rajiv Chowk metro station after 9 PM. However, entry into the station will remain open.

Additionally, starting at 8 PM, QR tickets for Rajiv Chowk station will not be available through the DMRC mobile app to help implement these measures smoothly.

Metro services on the rest of the network will continue to operate as per the regular schedule.

Drunk-driving in Gurugram

In Gurugram, over 80 traffic police officers will be stationed at various checkpoints on New Year’s Eve to prevent drink-driving. According to PTI, senior police officials stated that special checkpoints will be set up at eight key locations to strictly enforce anti-drink-driving rules.

The deployment will include eight traffic inspectors, 16 zonal officers, eight road safety officers, and 50 additional personnel.

Strict action will be taken against those found driving under the influence of alcohol under the Motor Vehicle Act, said Vij.
