His academic excellence, demonstrated by a 3.78 GPA, laid the foundation for his impressive career in reliability engineering. Specializing in product reliability estimation and testing, Akshay has made significant contributions across medical devices, robotics, and industrial equipment sectors. His expertise spans HALT/ALT testing, failure analysis, and the implementation of advanced reliability methodologies.

Q 1: What drew you to the field of reliability engineering, and how has your background in mechanical engineering influenced your approach?

A: My journey into reliability engineering began with my fascination with understanding how products perform under various conditions and why they fail. My mechanical engineering background has been invaluable in this pursuit, as it gives me a fundamental understanding of material properties and system behaviors. This knowledge has been particularly useful in my research work on microscale texturing and its effects on material wear resistance, where we achieved a 60% reduction in wear compared to untextured surfaces.

Q 2: How do you approach the design and execution of reliability tests for complex electromechanical components?

A: My approach to reliability testing is systematic and comprehensive. I begin by understanding the product’s intended use environment and failure modes. Then, I design tests that will not only validate the product’s reliability but also help identify potential weaknesses before they become field issues. Using tools like HALT/ALT testing, I can accelerate the aging process and understand how components might fail in real-world conditions. This approach has been particularly effective in testing critical components like valves, displays, and PCBAs.

Q 3: Could you elaborate on your experience with failure analysis and how you implement preventive measures?

A: Failure analysis is like solving a complex puzzle. I use various tools including SEM, X-Ray analysis, and root cause analysis methodologies like FRACAS and 8D. The key is not just identifying why a failure occurred, but understanding the broader implications for product design and maintenance. By analyzing failure patterns, I’ve been able to develop predictive models that help estimate when components might fail, allowing for preventive replacement before critical failures occur.

Q 4: How do you utilize data analytics and statistical tools in your work?

A: I rely heavily on tools like Minitab and Reliasoft for in-depth statistical analysis. These tools help me analyze MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), PPM (Parts Per Million), and warranty data to make data-driven decisions. The key is translating complex statistical information into actionable insights that can guide design improvements and maintenance strategies.

Q 5: What role does supplier collaboration play in ensuring product reliability?

A: Supplier collaboration is crucial in reliability engineering. I work closely with suppliers to gather component-specific reliability data and ensure that their manufacturing processes meet our reliability targets. This collaboration often involves detailed technical discussions, data sharing, and sometimes joint testing efforts to validate component reliability. It’s essential to build strong relationships with suppliers while maintaining clear technical requirements and quality standards.

Q 6: How do you balance the theoretical aspects of reliability engineering with practical implementation?

A: Theory provides the foundation, but practical implementation requires adaptability and creativity. During my time as a Graduate Research Assistant at RIT, I learned the importance of bridging this gap. For instance, when developing tribometer tests for micro-texturing research, we had to adapt theoretical concepts to create practical testing methodologies. This experience taught me the importance of combining rigorous theoretical analysis with practical engineering solutions.

Q 7: What role does Six Sigma methodology play in your approach to reliability engineering?

A: Six Sigma methodology is fundamental to my work in reliability engineering. It provides a structured approach to problem-solving and process improvement. I use Six Sigma tools for everything from designing experiments to analyzing failure data. The methodology’s emphasis on reducing variability and achieving consistent results aligns perfectly with reliability engineering goals.

Q 8: How do you approach teaching and mentoring others in reliability engineering concepts?

A: My experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at RIT showed me the importance of making complex concepts accessible. When teaching material properties testing, I found that hands-on demonstrations and real-world examples were most effective. I apply this same approach when working with teams, ensuring everyone understands not just the what, but the why of reliability engineering principles.

Q 9: What emerging trends do you see in reliability engineering, and how do you stay current with industry developments?

A: The field of reliability engineering is evolving rapidly with the integration of IoT sensors, AI-driven predictive analytics, and advanced materials. I stay current through continuous learning, attending industry conferences, and participating in professional development programs. Bitter family dispute hits 130-year-old business, now ready to fight with SEBI, they are linked to Ratan Tata through… https://www.india.com/business/bitter-family-dispute-hits-130-year-old-business-now-ready-to-fight-with-sebi-they-are-linked-to-ratan-tata-through-manasi-kirloskar-7508822/ Thu, 02 Jan 2025 06:09:19 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7508822 One of India’s oldest and most prominent industrial conglomerates, the Kirloskar Group, has been engaged in a bitter family feud for the past eight years. The disagreement centers around the division of assets among family members. Recently, the SEBI stepped in, asking for disclosure of a family settlement agreement signed in 2009. This move has led the group’s companies to prepare for a legal battle against SEBI.

Kirloskar Family Dispute

In 2016, involving members of the Kirloskar family over the interpretation and enforcement of a Family Settlement Agreement (FSA) signed on September 11, 2009. SEBI, in a letter dated December 30, 2024, directed four Kirloskar Group companies to disclose the agreement under listing obligations and disclosure requirements.

In response, the companies have declared their intent to challenge SEBI’s directive in court. The four entities Kirloskar Ferrous Industries Limited, Kirloskar Industries Limited, Kirloskar Pneumatic Company Limited, and Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited have stated that the FSA does not bind them and has no direct impact on their operations or obligations.

What Are Companies Saying?

The companies have argued that:

  1. The FSA’s enforceability is already under civil court review since 2018.
  2. SEBI has acted beyond its jurisdiction by commenting on a matter sub judice.
  3. The regulator’s directive disregards established principles of contract, corporate, and company law.
  4. The FSA imposes no specific restrictions or liabilities on the listed companies.

Ownership and Allegations

The feud involves three key family members, Sanjay Kirloskar, Chairman and Managing Director of Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL). Atul Kirloskar, Executive Chairman of Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL). Rahul Kirloskar, Executive Chairman of Kirloskar Pneumatic Company Limited (KPCL).

Sanjay Kirloskar has accused his brothers, Rahul and Atul, of trying to wrest control of his legacy and misleading the public. The group, which boasts a market capitalization of approximately Rs 1.56 lakh crore, has 14 manufacturing facilities globally. Sanjay has also claimed that the family dispute has led to a change in the company’s iconic logo.

SEBI’s Role and Family’s Resistance

SEBI’s intervention came in the form of a directive to disclose the 2009 agreement under the Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) regulations. However, the companies argue that the regulator’s decision is flawed and factually inaccurate, leading to their decision to seek judicial recourse.

Kirloskar Group Legacy

The Kirloskar Group, with its storied 130-year history, is one of India’s industrial stalwarts. It operates in sectors like engineering, manufacturing, and energy, and its products have a global reach. Despite its impressive legacy, the group finds itself in turmoil as family members vie for control.

Whether the feud will harm the group’s business or strengthen its governance framework remains to be seen.

How Is Ratan Tata And Kirloskar Are Linked?

Manasi Kirloskar is the daughter of the late Vikram Kirloskar, she is a fifth-generation scion of the Kirloskar dynasty of highly respected business families.

Manasi Kirloskar is wife of Neville Tata who is son of Noel Tata, half-brother of Late Ratan Tata. Neville Tata’s grandmother Simone Tata founded Trent. Neville Tata is heading the operations of Trent.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited (TKM) is an Indian joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation and Kirloskar Group, for the manufacture and sales of Toyota cars in India.

This move brought substantial changes to the industry’s financial performance and user dynamics.

Industry Revenue Surge Post-Tariff Hike

According to a report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the gross revenue of India’s telecom operators rose by 10.5% year-on-year to Rs 91,426 crore in the July-September 2024 quarter. Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), which forms the basis for government levies, saw an even sharper rise of 13.11%, reaching Rs 75,310 crore compared toRs 66,583 crore during the same period last year.

Reliance Jio Leads AGR Growth

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio reported a 14.19% year-on-year increase in AGR, amounting to Rs 27,652.68 crore. Meanwhile, rival Bharti Airtel, led by Sunil Mittal, outperformed with a 24.15% AGR growth during the same period. Vodafone Idea’s AGR rose modestly by 4.39% to Rs 7,836.98 crore, and BSNL reported a 1.54% increase to Rs 1,996.77 crore.

Impact On ARPU And Subscriber Base

The tariff hikes significantly boosted the operators’ Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). Monthly ARPU for mobile services climbed 9.60% quarter-over-quarter to Rs 172.57 in the September quarter, compared to Rs 157.45 in the June quarter. On a year-on-year basis, ARPU increased by 15.31%.

ARPU for prepaid services, which dominate India’s telecom market, stood at Rs 171, while postpaid ARPU reached Rs 190.67. How Bernard Arnault Became Mukesh Ambani’s Tenant?

Technically, Bernard Arnault is not a direct tenant of Mukesh Ambani. Instead, his company has leased space in a mall owned by Ambani. The mall in question is the Jio World Plaza, located in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). This mall is a hub for luxury brands, housing showrooms of some of the world’s most exclusive labels.

One of these showrooms belongs to Louis Vuitton, a flagship brand of Bernard Arnault’s LVMH. The Louis Vuitton store has leased a space of 7,465 square feet in Jio World Plaza. According to an ET Now report, Louis Vuitton is paying a monthly rent of Rs 40.5 lakh ($48,600) to Mukesh Ambani’s Jio World Plaza.

Hub For Global Luxury Brands

Apart from Louis Vuitton, other prominent brands under LVMH have also set up shop in Jio World Plaza. The mall has quickly established itself as a premier destination for luxury shopping in India. Another notable addition is the first store of the globally renowned luxury brand Balenciaga, which has also opened at Jio World Plaza. Reports suggest that Balenciaga is paying a monthly rent of ₹40 lakh ($48,000) for its space.

Jio World Plaza is becoming a luxury retail powerhouse, attracting some of the world’s biggest brands, including those owned by Bernard Arnault.

However, a personal milestone changed his trajectory. In 2008, while photographing his sister’s wedding, Radhik discovered his love for wedding photography. “My advice: your hobby is not going anywhere. Get so good at it that it pushes you away from your main career,” he said.

He also highlighted the unique joy of wedding photography. “Looking back, I’d choose it any day for the joy of the job itself. The highs in this profession far outweigh other genres, and it deserves more global attention.”

With a career rooted in creativity, love, and celebration, Radhik continues to inspire both aspiring photographers and professionals across industries.

Ratan Tata: A Legacy of Excellence

Ratan Tata’s bold decisions and unwavering vision transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse. From pioneering indigenous innovation with the Tata Indica to making high-profile acquisitions like Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover, his leadership redefined India’s industrial landscape.

He gained recognition for dismantling a bear cartel led by Manu Manek, who was also known as kingpin of the Bombay Stock Exchange. Over the years, Jain emerged as a trusted advisor and a vital force in the day-to-day operations of Reliance. Remarkably, sources within Reliance note that Jain has never taken a salary from the company, underscoring his commitment to the group’s vision.

Jain’s deep-rooted bond with Mukesh Ambani traces back to their school days at Hill Grange High School in Mumbai. His relationship with the Ambani family extends beyond business, as he was also a close confidant of Dhirubhai Ambani, the legendary founder of Reliance Industries.

Anand Jain Legacy Of Leadership

In 1984, his groundbreaking journey aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft, lasting eight days, marked a milestone in the nation’s space exploration legacy.

Rakesh Sharma’s Space Journey

Sharma’s historic spaceflight was made possible through a collaboration between ISRO and the Soviet Interkosmos Space Program. On April 3, 1984, he ascended to space alongside two Soviet cosmonauts, Yuri Malyshev and Gennady Strekalov. During his mission, Sharma conducted experiments in space science, captured breathtaking views of Earth, and even showcased the adaptability of yoga in a weightless environment.

One of the most memorable moments of his voyage came when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked how India looked from space. His patriotic reply, “Saare Jahan Se Accha” (Better than the rest of the world), resonated deeply with Indians and became a symbolic phrase of national pride.

Rakesh Sharma’s Career

Born on January 13, 1949, Rakesh Sharma grew up in Hyderabad, attending prominent institutions such as St. Ann’s High School, St. George’s Grammar School, and Nizam College. His ambition to serve in the armed forces led him to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune, and he joined the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1970.

Sharma’s military career was illustrious, including flying MIG-21s during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and completing 21 combat missions. In 1982, his selection for the space mission took him to the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, where his exceptional performance earned him the prestigious Hero of the Soviet Union title.

After his return from space, Sharma continued to serve with distinction. As Chief Test Pilot at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), he survived a near-fatal MIG-21 test flight incident with remarkable composure and resilience.

Rakesh Sharma: Life After Space

Sharma retired in 2001 and settled in Coonoor with his wife, Madhu. He enjoys a simple life, spending his days gardening, golfing, practicing yoga, reading, and traveling. Despite his monumental achievements, Sharma remains a figure of humility and quiet strength.

His name may not frequently appear in headlines today, but Rakesh Sharma’s legacy is immortalized in India’s history as a symbol of exploration, ambition, and unyielding spirit.

Rakesh Sharma’s Continuing Legacy

As India celebrated the success of Chandrayaan-3, Sharma expressed his heartfelt congratulations to ISRO, reaffirming his enduring connection to India’s space ambitions. Currently, he resides in the serene district of Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, leading a peaceful yet purposeful life. Away from the public eye, Sharma continues to contribute to India’s space missions as a member of the National Space Advisory Council for the Gaganyaan mission.

His “Monday Motivation” tweets are eagerly awaited by millions. Despite his vast wealth and success, Mahindra leads a remarkably simple life, residing in his ancestral home in Mumbai instead of a luxurious mansion.

Anand Mahindra Net Worth

Anand Mahindra has a net worth of Rs 17,000 crore, and his business empire spans diverse sectors such as automotive, IT, real estate, defense, and hospitality. With 137 companies under the Mahindra Group umbrella, he has no shortage of resources to build or buy a lavish home. Yet, Anand Mahindra chooses to live in the same house where his grandfather, Jagdish Chandra Mahindra, co-founder of Mahindra & Mahindra, once resided.

Ancestral Home On Napean Sea Road

The house, situated on Mumbai’s upscale Napean Sea Road, was rented by Anand Mahindra’s grandfather, K.C. Mahindra. Although Anand wasn’t born when the family moved into the house, it became the foundation of the Mahindra legacy, and he grew up there. For decades, the Mahindra family called this house their home, filled with memories and traditions.

Anand Mahindra Preserving the Family Legacy

When the landlord expressed plans to renovate and possibly demolish the house, Anand Mahindra felt an emotional tug. Determined to preserve his family’s legacy, he purchased the property for Rs 270 crore. Spanning 13,000 square feet, Mahindra renamed the house “Gulistan,” which means “a garden of flowers,” reflecting his deep attachment to the home.

Anand Mahindra Family

Anand Mahindra is married to Anuradha Mahindra, a prominent journalist and editor-in-chief of Verve and The Indian Quarterly. She holds a degree in psychology from Mumbai’s Sophia College. Their two daughters, Aalika and Divya, have pursued careers in film and design and assist their mother with her magazine ventures.

Anand Mahindra’s Daughters

Both daughters live abroad and are married to foreign nationals. They have shown little interest in joining the Mahindra business empire. However, Anand Mahindra fully supports their decision to pursue their passions and chart their own paths in life.

The bout, backed by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is slated to take place at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, marking a significant milestone for combat sports in India.

McGregor VS Logan Paul At Wankhede Stadium

McGregor’s comeback, three years after his leg injury in a trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier, is projected to earn him an astonishing $250 million, one of the richest purses in boxing history. The fight is tied to India’s “Visit India” tourism campaign and highlights Ambani’s ambition to bring global sporting spectacles to the country. With the 33,000 capacity Wankhede Stadium as the venue, the event promises a fusion of combat sports and entertainment featuring global stars.

On X (formerly Twitter), McGregor confirmed the news, stating, “I am in preliminary agreements with the Ambani family to face Logan Paul in a boxing exhibition in India,” accompanied by heart and Indian flag emojis. Though date is not yet declared but it is expected take place in 2025.

Challenges Ahead McGregor

Despite the excitement, the event faces challenges due to McGregor’s contractual ties with the UFC. The Irishman is still bound by a two-fight contract signed in 2018 before his bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov. UFC rules typically prohibit fighters from participating in other combat sports without explicit approval. However, McGregor’s history with crossovers, including his high-profile 2017 boxing match against Floyd Mayweather, suggests a potential path forward.

McGregor’s legal battles also loom over his comeback. In November, he was ordered to pay €250,000 in damages following assault allegations stemming from a 2018 incident in Dublin. McGregor has denied the accusations and plans to appeal, stating, “As much as I regret it, everything that happened that night was consensual, and all witnesses swore to that under oath.”

A Milestone For Combat Sports In India

The McGregor-Paul fight is already sparking debate within the combat sports community. Critics, including promoter Lou DiBella, have questioned the blend of entertainment and sport, while fans eagerly await the spectacle. Regardless of opinions, the event positions India as a rising hub for international sports and entertainment, setting the stage for a landmark moment in 2025.

Praising her dedication, Mukesh shared how Nita regularly traveled to Jamnagar despite having young children Akash and Isha, who were four years old, and Anant, just one.

Mukesh recounted that during the early days of Jamnagar’s development, he and Nita would stay in a guest house for one to two days at a time. Despite the challenges, Nita remained committed and played a pivotal role in helping set up Reliance’s operations in Jamnagar.

Nita Ambani’s Role In Nurturing Family Values

Nita Ambani’s dedication extended beyond business as she instilled strong values in her children. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she spoke about the upbringing of their family, saying, “Both Mukesh and I grew up in a middle-class, joint family. There was a lot of love, compassion, warmth, and understanding, but we also had to give up a lot of things. Our children cannot grow far from the values that they grow up seeing. The kids saw us, Mukesh’s parents, and my parents, and they imbibed our values.”

Over time, Nita transitioned into the family business alongside Mukesh. Today, she serves as the Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation and Dhirubhai Ambani International School, the owner of the Mumbai Indians IPL team, and a non-executive director of Reliance Industries.

Isha Ambani On Lessons Learned From Nita Amabni

Isha Ambani has often credited her mother, Nita, for teaching her the art of balancing family and work. In an interview with Vogue, Isha shared her perspective on Nita’s influence and her progressive views on women in the workplace:
“As much as I want to believe that women can have it all, I know that my mom gave it all up to raise us. But once we grew up, I also saw her balance work and home perfectly. Watching her play all these different roles—from full-time mom to businesswoman—I learned how important each facet is in a woman’s life and how one needs to define what ‘having it all’ means during these different stages.”
