Some movies captivate audiences so deeply that filmmakers are compelled to create sequels or remakes. Every time this particular film hit the box office, it turned out to be a blockbuster. Here's the story of the widely acclaimed Drishyam franchise.
The movie revolutionized South Indian cinema and raked in massive profits at the box office. The film was first made in Malayalam in 2013, starring Mohanlal in the lead role. Produced on a modest budget of ₹5 crores, the film earned a staggering Rs 75 crores.
In 2014, remakes of the film were released in Kannada and Telugu. The Kannada version featured Navya Nair and Asha Sharath in pivotal roles, while the Telugu version starred Venkatesh, Meena, and Nadia in key roles.
Interestingly, the original Drishyam remained in theatres for an impressive 100 days. Following this success, the Tamil remake, titled Papanasam, was released in 2015, with Kamal Haasan taking on the lead role.
After its phenomenal success in India, Drishyam was remade in Sri Lanka in 2017. The Sinhalese version was titled Dharma Yuddha and received widespread acclaim.
Not stopping at the Indian subcontinent, the film’s success inspired a Chinese remake titled Sheep Without a Shepherd, which was released in 2019. The movie carried forward the legacy of Drishyam and further cemented its international appeal.
In 2015, Bollywood also adapted the movie under the same name. The Hindi remake starred Ajay Devgn in the lead role. Produced on a budget of Rs 48 crores, the film earned approximately Rs 110.40 crores worldwide. A sequel of the film was also made.
