Pakistan Nuclear Power Plant:  The Chashma Nuclear Power Plant is a large commercial nuclear power plant located at Chashma in Punjab, Pakistan. Officially known as Chashma Nuclear Power Complex, the Pakistani nuclear power plant is currently generating energy for industrial usage with four nuclear reactors. Here’s all the details about the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, assumed to be the largest nuclear power plant of Pakistan.

The planning for the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant started in 1973–75 by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), when it was selected that the Chashma Lake will be its potential site. After many years in 1980, Pakistan discussed the funding of the nuclear plant with its ‘all-weather ally’ China, and the construction of the nuclear power plant finally began in 1982–83.

Update from Pakistan Nuclear Agency

In a recent update, Pakistan Nuclear Agency (PNRA) issued a statement saying that the license for the C-5 power plant has been issued. With a capacity of 200 MW, the C-5 is a third generation advanced pressurized water reactor having double- shell containment and reactor- filter wetting systems. The estimated cost of the nuclear project is around US$3.7 billion .

Talking about the benefits, the plant is expected to provide its services for 60 years. Also, the C-5 power plant will be the third nuclear power plant of this design in Pakistan. Readers must note that, there are two more already operational plants Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 and 3.

Pakistan building country’s largest nuclear power

Pakistan is going to build the country’s largest nuclear power plant to increase electricity production. Pakistan’s nuclear agency has given approval for this. This plant has been designed by the Chinese company Hualong.

Why it’s a big worry for India, US?

There are no reports which concretely prove the fact that India’s ‘unfriendly’ neighbour Pakistan will only use the huge nuclear power plant designed by China only for civilian purposes, therefore speculations are rife that the nuclear power plant may be used for military purpose. Hence, it could be a point of concern for its neigbour India and US, which has recently taken a stand against Pakistan’s long-range missile programme.
