Muscat: Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said of Oman is one of the key personalities of the Middle East. Five years ago, when he took over the throne following the death of his cousin, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, no one expected that he would play such an important role in the near future. Both the United States and the Western countries have turned their focus on Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said with regards to peace in the Middle East.
To recall, his cousin and predecessor, Sultan Qaboos, who had maintained open relations with Israel for many years. In 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Oman, where a meeting took place between Sultan Qaboos and Netanyahu at the palace in Muscat.
The diplomatic representation to Israel in the region was first approved by Oman. Following this, other countries in the region established diplomatic representation as well. Sultan Qaboos ruled the country for 49 years.
He managed to stabilize a nation plagued by never-ending civil wars. Now, Sultan Haitham is following in Qaboos’ footsteps. However, the country is now concerned about active terrorist organizations in Yemen.
The country has maintained good relations with the Houthis, despite the impact of the conflict in Yemen on Oman. The Houthis receive medical assistance in Oman, and there are reports suggesting that their smuggled goods also pass through Oman.
This has been beneficial for Oman, as it has assisted in mediating between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, and has also facilitated American involvement in mediation efforts. This is why Oman is considered significant even by Israel, as it could play a role in mediating talks with Iran.
It is important to note that the upcoming Trump administration does not trust Oman and Israel has openly accused Qatar. This situation could work in Qatar’s favor and make it significant in mediating between Israel and Iran.
A day may come when Israel will need a mediator for talks with Iran. In such a scenario, Oman could prove to be an important card for Israel.
