It’s often the films with a compelling story and a modest budget that leave a big mark on their audience. Today, we are talking about one such film that has not only surprised audiences with its performance but also set new records in the Malayalam film industry. Manjummel Boys, a film that was made with a budget of just 20 crores, ended up earning an astounding 242 crores at the box office, becoming one of the biggest hits of 2024.
What makes Manjummel Boys even more remarkable is its simplicity. Unlike many big-budget blockbusters that rely on foreign locations or picturesque landscapes, this film was shot in the streets of a small village. The unassuming setting, combined with a gripping story, resonated deeply with audiences from all corners of India, from North to South. The film’s appeal lies in its authenticity, showing that a well-crafted story with relatable characters can capture hearts, regardless of its budget.
Manjummel Boys became the first Malayalam film to cross the 200-crore mark. It also emerged as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2024, setting new standards for regional cinema. With its huge success, it’s clear that a strong story can sometimes make all the difference, no matter the budget or lavish locations.
Set against the backdrop of the Guna Caves rescue in 2006, Manjummel Boys follows a group of friends from the village of Manjummel in Kochi, who embark on a trip to Kodaikanal. Their vacation takes an unexpected turn when one of them becomes trapped in the Guna Caves. The film’s blend of adventure, suspense and camaraderie struck a chord with viewers, earning it a spot as one of the top films of 2024.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi S. Poduval, Lal Jr., Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Arun Kurian, Khalid Rahman, and Shebin Benson. Directed by Chidambaram and produced by Soubin Shahir, Babu Shahir and Shawn Antony, the movie is based on a real story. Manjummel Boys was theatrically released on February 22, 2024, in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
