Delhi-NCR wake up to light showers, rain to bring down temperature; cold wave warning issued for these states

As per the Indian Meteorological Department, light to moderate rainfall is expected in parts of Delhi and NCR, including Safidon, Jind, Panipat, Gohana, Ganaur, Hansi, Meham, Sonipat, Tosham, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Matanhail, Jhajjar, Loharu. Similar conditions are likely in Farrukhnagar, Kosli, Mahendragarh, Narnaul (Haryana), Baraut, Baghpat, Khekra (U.P.), Pilani (Rajasthan), Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Narwana, Karnal, Fatehabad, Rajound, Assandh, Barwala, Adampur, Hisar, Siwani, Sohna, Rewari (Haryana), Gangoh, Hastinapur (U.P.), Sidhmukh, Sadulpur, and Bhiwadi. Rain is also expected in Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan) within the next two hours.

Meanwhile, northern states are witnessing a severe cold spell coupled with dense fog.

The weather department has predicted cold wave conditions are likely to intensify in some states in the coming days. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been sounded for heavy rainfall in the coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 20. In Delhi, a dense fog was witnessed in the early morning accompanied by light drizzles.

The IMD stated that due to cold winds, the temperature in Delhi may further drop in the coming days. The maximum temperature in the national capital this week will be between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to remain around 5 to 7 degrees Celsius.

Weather Across the Country

As per weather agency - Skymet, light to moderate rainfall, with some heavy rainfall, is expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh, North Tamil Nadu, and South Odisha in the next 24 hours.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, South Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Additionally, cold wave conditions may develop in parts of Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

Temperature Drop Due to Snowfall

From early December onwards, the Western Himalayas have been blanketed with a mixture of moderate and heavy rain and snow, which has significantly cooled down North India's temperatures. This snowfall, signalling the onset of winter, is caused by a meteorological event known as a Western Disturbance. As this weather event moved its course, icy gusts from the snow-covered mountains began to sweep into parts of North-West and Central India, leading to a steep plunge in temperatures. It's expected that pockets of Himachal Pradesh will grapple with a cold wave, or even severe cold wave conditions, from December 24 to 26.
