The second vessel ship from Pakistan reached Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port a day after Muhammad Yunus met Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif in Cairo.

Amid the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh, a second container ship from Pakistan has arrived at Chittagong Port. The container ship reached Chittagong a day after Bangladesh’s interim government’s chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, held a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Cairo. Notably, this was the second meeting between the leaders since September. According to Chittagong Port Authority data, the Pakistani vessel carried as many as 1,000 single containers. However, the contents of the containers remain undisclosed. Interestingly, the first vessel from Pakistan arrived in Bangladesh in November this year, marking the first such shipment in over 50 years. The first vessel reportedly carried textiles and sugar.
For India it is necessary to keep a watch on these Pakistani ships reaching Bangladesh, as the containers of these vessels may contain weapons for terror activities, The Economic Times reported quoting people familiar with the development.

Traders Forced To Import Goods From Pakistan

As per sources, the traders from Bangladesh are being forced to import goods from Pakistan. Some Bangladeshi officials in the shipping ministry have put a suggestion to review of India-Bangladesh shipping pact under which India will get access to Chittagong and Mongla ports.

First Pakistan Ship Reached Bangladesh In 53 Years

In the cool month of November, a notable event took place – the arrival of a cargo ship at Chittagong port. It was indeed a historic moment, marking the establishment of the first-ever direct sea route between Pakistan and Bangladesh in over half a century. This vessel named the MV Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan and sailing under the Panama flag, originates from Anhui Guohai Sanlong Shipping in China. Carving out its maritime journey from the UAE, the ship docked in Pakistan before finally setting a course and reaching Bangladesh shores.

In the past, goods transported from Pakistan to Bangladesh took a detour via countries including Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. However, in an unexpected 2022 move, Bangladesh’s Premier, Hasina, blocked the docking of PNS Taimur, a Pakistani warship designed by China, at the crucial Chittagong port situated in the Bay of Bengal.

Despite granting access to the landlocked northeastern states, the Chittagong port raises substantial safety issues. A prime example of this was in April 2004, when officials managed to halt an illicit attempt to transport ten truckloads of illegal weaponry through Chittagong. The plot involved high-ranking individuals from the BNP-Jamaat government in power then and Paresh Baruah, who was in Dhaka at the time. The ultimate purpose was to supply these arms to insurgency groups such as the United Liberation Front of Asom in the northeast, as well as potentially to Pakistan-based terrorist organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba.
