New Delhi: In a significant infrastructural development, China is constructing the world’s longest motorway tunnel, the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, to accelerate the country’s economic growth. According to the reports, China is digging several kilometers of mountains for the construction of the tunnel.
The Xi Jinping government is excavating the Tian Shan mountains to build the tunnel. The Tian Shan mountains is considered to be one of the seven major mountain ranges in the world. Once completed, this 20.9 km long motorway tunnel will significantly reduce travel time.
As a crucial section of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, the new tunnel with a total length of 22.1km will traverse the Tianshan Mountains and open a new pathway to southern Xinjiang. The construction of the expressway started in 2020.
China is spending USD 3.7 billion (over 31,000 crore rupees) on this project. Norway is also building a similar 25.7 km long tunnel, but China’s work is progressing much faster. The authorities are also using advanced machines to construct the longest motorway tunnel, which is being carved through mountains. China plans to open the tunnel for traffic by October 2025.
The tunnel will reduce the travel time by 20 minutes through the Tian Shan mountains. The Tian Shan mountain range is one of the seven major mountain ranges in the world, and its average width is about 321 km. With the construction of this tunnel, crossing it will become much easier.
