Tensions in the Middle East are escalating, particularly after an Israeli airstrike on a UN facility in Lebanon. This incident raises serious concerns for the safety of peacekeepers and civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.
India is deeply worried about the escalating conflict in West Asia, particularly as Israel ramps up its attacks on Hezbollah positions. This concern comes after UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon were fired upon by Israeli forces, prompting New Delhi to issue a statement addressing the troubling situation.
About 900 Indian soldiers are part of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon. Luckily, they were not at the UNIFIL headquarters when it was attacked by Israeli forces. In addition to the soldiers, there are around 25 staff officers, including medical experts, also working in the area.
Hours Later, New Delhi released a statement today after Israeli forces fired upon UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. There are around 900 Indian soldiers among the peacekeepers, but they were not at the UN facility during the attack.
Meanwhile, The Ministry of External Affairs expressed worry about the worsening security situation along the Blue Line, which is the border area. They stated that they are keeping a close eye on the situation as it develops.
However, Israel has defended its actions, stating that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed Hezbollah has fired over 130 rockets near 26 UN facilities since the war began. The IDF also released a map showing that these locations are “less than 300 meters” away from the UN facilities.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 was created to end the 2006 Lebanon War and has been crucial in maintaining peace between Israel and Lebanon for nearly 20 years. Unanimously approved, it aims to stop hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, calling for a permanent ceasefire and the establishment of a buffer zone. Approximately 10,000 UN peacekeepers are deployed on the ground to enforce this resolution and uphold peace in the region.
The “Blue Line” is a UN-recognized demarcation marking Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, separating Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights, though it isn’t an official border. Spanning 120 km, it has been vital for peace since the 2006 war and is central to Resolution 1701.
