In 1998, under Ratan Tata’s visionary leadership, the Tata Group launched its first passenger car, Tata Indica. This was India’s first 100% indigenous car. It quickly became a sensation, breaking all sales records. Within two years, Tata Indica emerged as the number one car in its segment, setting the stage for Tata Motors’ dominance in the automotive industry.
In a landmark move in 2000, Tata Group acquired the Tetley Group, the second-largest tea company globally. A British company with a long legacy, Tetley became a part of Tata Global Beverages, strengthening Tata Group’s position in the global beverage market and putting India on the map as a major player in this sector.
In 2002, Tata Group acquired a controlling stake in Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), India’s first public sector unit (PSU) to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Established in 1986, VSNL’s acquisition highlighted Tata’s growing dominance in the telecommunications sector and marked a major step in India’s globalization efforts.
In 2003, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became the first Indian software company to surpass $1 billion in revenue. This achievement not only underscored India’s emerging strength in the IT sector but also paved the way for TCS’s public listing in the following year, solidifying its position as a global leader.
In 2004, Tata Motors became the first Indian automobile company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The same year, the company acquired the heavy vehicles unit of South Korea’s Daewoo Motors. This strategic acquisition bolstered Tata Motors’ presence in the global market and expanded its portfolio in the commercial vehicle segment.
In one of the most ambitious moves under Ratan Tata’s leadership, Tata Steel acquired Corus, Europe’s second-largest steel company, in 2007. This acquisition was a game-changer, making Tata Steel one of the world’s largest steel producers and marking India’s rise in the global steel industry.
The year 2008 was monumental for Tata Group. The company acquired Jaguar and Land Rover, the premium automobile brands of Ford, and later established Jaguar Land Rover as a separate entity. This acquisition significantly enhanced Tata Motors’ brand value and global standing.
The same year, Tata Motors introduced the Tata Nano, the world’s most affordable car. Despite mixed market reception, Nano became a symbol of innovation and engineering marvel, showcasing Tata’s commitment to creating accessible solutions for the masses.
Ratan Tata’s bold decisions and unwavering vision transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse. From pioneering indigenous innovation with the Tata Indica to making high-profile acquisitions like Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover, his leadership redefined India’s industrial landscape.
