But why do people share their personal journeys, the turmoil and triumphs? Because it is relatable. Any story and every story of vulnerabilities made public can serve as inspiration to anyone. It seems palpable and similarly Bharti Singh opened about her journey of incredible transformation. The ‘Laughter Queen’ lost 15 kgs in 2021 when she made her first appearance after transformation.

Spreading laughter with her wit, she always owns her self and body unapologetically serving some major self-worth goals. Recently, in a podcast with Prajakta Kohli, they talked about their weight loss journeys and how Bharti is now grateful that she can wear crop tops too. Bharti said, “Main toh bahut khush hoon patli hoke. Kitna maza ata hai jab crop top mil jate hain apne size ke. Mere ko bada maza ata hai, ache ache kapde mil jate hain (I am so much happier after losing weight. I find crop tops in my size now. I really enjoy that I get to wear nice clothes).”

Bharti Singh Weight Loss Journey

From 91 to 76, Singh’s story still stands as a source of inspiration. She makes us laugh effortlessly and her weight loss story is all about making simple efforts. She also did not opt for rigorous diet or hardcore gym workout regimen.

In one of her interviews, Bharti Singh said, “Even I am surprised that I have lost so much weight, but I am equally happy because I feel healthy and fit. Abhi saans nahi chadhti or halka halka feel hota hai.” Being overweight entails several health problems and Singh admitted to have her diabetes and asthma in control after her weight loss.

So how did the laughter queen actually do it? Singh says she held onto one diet practise and that was intermittent fasting. She used to have meals in a certain window only that is post 12pm and until 7 pm in the evening. Being raw and honest as always, she once talked how the innate Punjabi in her did not give up on parathas and makhan (butter). She managed to shed 15 kgs by dedicatedly adhering to intermittent fasting, without giving up her favourite food and without even having a charted out workout plan.

Bharti’s diet was mostly eating in controlled portions and home-cooked meals. Not eating post 7 helped her curb those midnight hunger pangs too. “I don’t follow any diet, I just fast for 15-16 hours and don’t eat anything between 7 pm-12 pm. My body doesn’t accept dinner any later than 7 pm now. But I attack food after 12 pm. Then I have my regular parathas, eggs, dal-sabzi, everything I have always liked,” she stated speaking with The Indian Express.

Weight loss story: Woman reveals how she lost 20 kgs with… https://www.india.com/health/weight-loss-story-woman-reveals-how-she-lost-20-kgs-with-7507608/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 14:24:24 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7507608 Losing weight is not just about shedding kilos; it’s about transforming your mindset, building sustainable habits, and discovering self-discipline. Pritika Srinivasan’s weight loss journey is a powerful example of how small, consistent efforts can yield life-changing results. Beyond the numbers on the scale, her journey represents resilience, confidence, and a renewed relationship with health. In her transformation, she followed eight practical strategies that played a pivotal role in her success. These tips aren’t about crash diets or impossible routines; they focus on simple, science-backed habits anyone can incorporate into their daily lives.

1. Walk Up and Down the Stairs for 10 Minutes

Stair climbing is a simple yet highly effective cardio exercise. Research reveals that climbing stairs burns up to 20 times more calories than walking on a flat surface. It engages multiple muscle groups and boosts heart health. Just 10 minutes of stair climbing daily can kickstart your metabolism and set the tone for an active day.

2. Don’t Eat Extra When You’re Full

Mindful eating is the cornerstone of Pritika’s journey. Overeating often stems from emotional triggers or habit rather than hunger. By tuning into her body’s signals, she learned to stop eating when she felt full, avoiding unnecessary calorie intake. Mindfulness meditation also helped her control binge eating tendencies.

3. Say No to Sugar

Excessive sugar intake can lead to weight gain, mood swings, and long-term health issues like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Pritika reduced refined sugar and opted for natural alternatives in moderation. Whether it’s brown sugar, honey, or jaggery, moderation remains key as they all have similar calorie content.

4. Eat Homemade Food

Eating home-cooked meals gives you control over ingredients, portions, and cooking methods. Pritika emphasized fresh, nutrient-rich, and balanced meals. Homemade food helps avoid hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and excessive calories found in packaged or restaurant meals.

5. Avoid Oily and Junk Food

Fast food is not only calorie-dense but also contributes to liver damage and increased risks of chronic diseases. Eliminating fried and processed foods significantly boosted Pritika’s energy levels and aided in weight loss. Instead, she focused on whole, natural foods.

6. Include More Protein in Your Diet

Protein plays a vital role in weight loss by increasing satiety, preserving lean muscle mass, and enhancing metabolism. Pritika ensured her diet had adequate protein sources like lean meats, eggs, lentils, and dairy. On average, adults are advised to consume 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight.

7. Aim for at Least 30 Minutes of Physical Activity Daily

Exercise doesn’t always have to be intense or lengthy. Whether it’s walking, cleaning the house, or light cardio, consistency is key. Studies suggest that 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week can significantly reduce health risks and support weight loss.

8. Chew Everything Thoroughly

Chewing food properly aids digestion and prevents overeating by allowing your brain enough time to register fullness. Slow eating can help reduce calorie intake and improve nutrient absorption, making it an underrated yet essential habit for weight management.

The Takeaway

Pritika’s journey isn’t about quick fixes but long-term habits. Each of these strategies is accessible, adaptable, and backed by science. Whether you’re starting your weight loss journey or looking for ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle, these eight tips offer practical steps toward sustainable health goals. Remember, the smallest habits often lead to the biggest changes.

Heart attack risk: How winter holidays may increase cardiac problems? https://www.india.com/health/heart-attack-risk-how-winter-holidays-may-increase-cardiac-problems-7507507/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 12:21:11 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7507507 The winter holiday season, a time for celebration and joy, can paradoxically lead to an increase in heart attack risks for many individuals. Holiday season is a time to be merry but it also affects the health in ways ne may not even comprehend. During winters, gourmet indulgence increase, fluid intake and physical activity may decrease and that may have serious health effects. Various factors contribute to this heightened risk, and understanding them can help mitigate potential health issues during this festive period.

Heart Health in Winter

  1. Dietary Changes: During the holidays, people often indulge in rich, high-fat foods, sugary desserts, and excessive alcohol consumption. These dietary changes can lead to weight gain, elevated cholesterol levels, and increased blood pressure-all of which are significant risk factors for heart attacks. The high sodium content in many holiday dishes can also contribute to hypertension, putting additional strain on the heart.
  2. Increased Stress Levels: The holiday season can be a source of significant stress due to various factors, including family dynamics, financial concerns, and the pressure to create the perfect holiday experience. Stress triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline, which can elevate heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiac events. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, and adequate rest is crucial during this busy time.
  3. Cold Weather Effects: Cold weather itself can pose risks for heart health. The body’s response to cold includes constriction of blood vessels, which raises blood pressure and increases the workload on the heart. For individuals with existing heart conditions, this can be particularly dangerous. Dressing warmly and avoiding excessive physical exertion in cold conditions can help mitigate these risks.
  4. Physical Inactivity: The holidays often lead to a more sedentary lifestyle as people spend time indoors, enjoying holiday festivities. Physical inactivity can contribute to weight gain and poor cardiovascular health. Engaging in regular physical activity, even in short bursts, can help counteract the effects of holiday indulgence and maintain heart health.
  5. Neglecting Medication and Health Monitoring: During the holiday season, routine healthcare practices may be neglected. People might skip medications, miss medical appointments, or overlook symptoms of existing heart conditions. It’s essential to maintain a routine and prioritize health, even amid holiday celebrations. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and cholesterol levels can help catch any potential issues early.

While the winter holidays are a time for celebration, they also carry increased risks for heart attacks and other cardiac problems. By being mindful of dietary habits, managing stress, staying active, and prioritizing health, individuals can enjoy the festivities while minimising potential heart risks. Taking proactive steps to maintain heart health during this season can lead to a happier and healthier new year.

What is Norovirus? A contagious virus that is spreading fast in… https://www.india.com/health/what-is-norovirus-a-contagious-virus-that-is-spreading-fast-in-usa-7506638/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 06:56:31 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7506638 Norovirus or the “stomach bug” is regarded as one of the highly contagious forms of virus that spreada via contaminated food and water. This causes gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is one of the leading causes of foodborne illness outbreaks worldwide and is notorious for its rapid spread, especially in crowded environments such as schools, nursing homes, and cruise ships. This vomiting bug may cause sudden bouts of vomiting, nausea or diarrhea.

“The most recent numbers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show there were 91 outbreaks of norovirus reported during the week of Dec. 5, up from 69 outbreaks the last week of November,” reports Associated Press.

All About Norovirus

Norovirus is primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route. This can occur in several ways:

  • Contaminated Food and Water: Consuming food or water contaminated with norovirus is one of the most common ways to contract the virus. This is particularly true for raw or undercooked shellfish and contaminated fruits and vegetables.
  • Person-to-Person Contact: The virus can easily spread from one person to another through close contact. If an infected person prepares food or shares utensils, the virus can be transmitted to others.
  • Contaminated Surfaces: Norovirus can survive on surfaces for extended periods. Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes can lead to infection.

Symptoms of Norovirus Infection

Symptoms of norovirus typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and can include:

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Sudden onset of nausea and frequent vomiting are hallmark symptoms.
  • Diarrhea: Watery diarrhea can occur, often leading to dehydration.
  • Stomach Cramps: Abdominal pain and cramps are common.
  • Fever and Chills: Some individuals may experience low-grade fever, chills, and fatigue.

The symptoms usually last between one to three days, but in some cases, it possibly may persist longer, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

Prevention Tips

Preventing norovirus infection involves several key practices:

  • Hand Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before handling food, is crucial. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers may not be effective against norovirus.
  • Food Safety: Cooking shellfish thoroughly and washing fruits and vegetables can help reduce the risk of contamination. Avoid preparing food for others if you are sick.
  • Cleaning and Disinfection: Regularly disinfecting surfaces, especially in high-traffic areas, can help prevent the spread of norovirus. Use bleach-based cleaners, as norovirus is resistant to many common disinfectants.
  • Hydration: It is essential to stay hydrated, especially if experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. Oral rehydration solutions can help replenish lost fluids and electrolytes.
Rest: Taking time to rest and recover is vital for a full recovery.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can lead to significant discomfort and disruption. Understanding how it spreads, recognising its symptoms, and practicing good hygiene can help protect you and your community from outbreaks. By taking preventive measures, you can minimise the risk of contracting or spreading this resilient virus.

Diabetes in cats, dogs: symptoms, treatment, and how to ensure they remain healthy https://www.india.com/health/diabetes-in-cats-dogs-symptoms-treatment-and-how-to-ensure-they-remain-healthy-7497114/ Fri, 27 Dec 2024 11:00:09 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7497114 Diabetes isn’t just a human concern—it also affects our beloved pets. Dogs and cats can develop diabetes mellitus, a condition that affects how their body processes glucose. While the disease can seem daunting, with proper care, monitoring, and early intervention, pets with diabetes can still live happy and fulfilling lives. However, the approach to managing diabetes in dogs and cats differs, requiring tailored treatment plans and lifestyle adjustments.

Understanding Diabetes in Pets

Diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce or properly use insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels. In diabetic pets, glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of being absorbed by cells for energy. This condition often leads to excessive thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite, and unexplained weight loss.
While diabetes is less common in pets compared to humans, it still affects around 1.5% of dogs and 0.5–1% of cats. Obesity, poor diet, genetics, and lack of exercise are significant contributing factors.

Types of Diabetes in Pets

1.Type 1 Diabetes: Common in dogs but rare in cats, this form occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It typically requires lifelong insulin therapy.
2.Type 2 Diabetes: More common in cats, this type results from insulin resistance and dysfunctional insulin-producing cells. Risk factors include obesity, aging, and genetic predisposition.

Diagnosis and Symptoms

Early diagnosis is crucial for managing diabetes in pets. Common symptoms include:
•Increased thirst and urination
•Excessive hunger
•Unexplained weight loss
•Lethargy
•Cloudy eyes (common in dogs)
Veterinarians diagnose diabetes through blood glucose tests, urine analysis, and observing clinical symptoms.

Treatment Options

Treatment focuses on controlling blood glucose levels and preventing complications. Key strategies include:
•Insulin Therapy: Both dogs and cats often require daily insulin injections to manage their condition effectively.
•Dietary Adjustments: Low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets help stabilize blood sugar levels, especially in cats.
•Exercise: Regular physical activity aids glucose regulation and prevents obesity.
•Medication: In cats, medications like SGLT2 inhibitors can help control blood sugar levels effectively.

Challenges in Managing Diabetes

Managing diabetes in pets requires consistent effort from pet owners. Administering insulin, maintaining a strict diet, and monitoring blood sugar levels can be demanding. In dogs, diabetes is typically a lifelong condition, while cats have a higher chance of remission with early intervention and proper treatment.

Improving Quality of Life for Diabetic Pets

Advances in veterinary care, including continuous glucose monitors, make managing diabetes more accessible. Owners must work closely with their veterinarians to create a personalized care plan, including regular vet visits, glucose monitoring, and necessary dietary changes.

Conclusion

While diabetes in pets is a serious condition, it is manageable with proper care, medication, and lifestyle changes. Early detection, consistent treatment, and a dedicated approach can ensure diabetic pets lead healthy and happy lives. Pet owners play a pivotal role in their furry friend’s well-being, and with the right support, diabetes doesn’t have to be a barrier to a fulfilling life for dogs and cats.

Weight loss story: Woman reveals how she lost 50 kgs with this affordable and sustainable diet https://www.india.com/health/weight-loss-story-woman-reveals-how-she-lost-50-kgs-with-this-affordable-and-sustainable-diet-7496835/ Fri, 27 Dec 2024 08:19:13 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7496835 In a world overwhelmed with quick-fix diet trends and fleeting fitness fads, Shikha Singh stands as a testament to what sheer determination and a structured plan can achieve. Losing 50 kg is no small feat, and her story is not just about dropping numbers on a scale but about embracing a sustainable lifestyle. Shikha’s weight loss journey has captured attention for its simplicity, budget-friendly nature, and focus on overall well-being.

The Beginning of the Transformation

At her heaviest, Shikha weighed 110 kg, and her health began to feel the strain of excess weight. Struggling with energy levels, joint pain, and a lack of confidence, she decided to make a drastic change. But instead of resorting to extreme dieting or unhealthy practices, Shikha chose intermittent fasting—a globally recognized eating pattern known for its health benefits, including weight loss, improved metabolism, and better digestion.
Intermittent fasting worked for Shikha because it allowed her to focus on when she ate rather than obsessing over calorie counting. Her diet revolved around an 8-hour eating window and a 16-hour fasting period, ensuring her body had enough time to digest, repair, and rejuvenate.

The Magical Morning Routine

Shikha began her day with amla juice, a vitamin C-rich drink known for its metabolism-boosting properties and skin benefits. This magical morning elixir became a ritual, setting the tone for the rest of her day.
Her breakfast was kept simple yet nutritious: methi roti paired with 50 gm paneer bhurji, lots of vegetables, and tea without sugar. Shikha emphasized including seasonal vegetables in her rotis, adding fiber and essential nutrients to her diet.
For a mid-morning snack, Shikha opted for 150 gm of freshly cut seasonal fruits, ensuring her body stayed hydrated and energized.

Balanced Meals for Weight Loss

Lunch and dinner were straightforward yet balanced. Her meals typically included:
•100 gm cooked rice
•100 gm cooked dal
•100 gm low-fat curd
•A side of green salad
For dinner, Shikha slightly modified her meals by adding 150 gm chicken curry along with rice and salad, ensuring a good balance of protein, carbs, and fiber.

Snacking Smart

Evening snacks are often a downfall for most people on weight-loss journeys, but Shikha stayed disciplined. She chose black coffee paired with homemade weight-loss namkeen—a recipe she often shared on her social media platforms.

The Importance of Lifestyle Adjustments

Weight loss isn’t just about what you eat—it’s also about how you live. Shikha emphasized the importance of:
•Drinking at least 3 liters of water daily to flush toxins.
•Getting 7-8 hours of quality sleep to regulate hormones and metabolism.
•Walking briskly for 30 minutes daily to keep her body active and energized.
These small yet impactful habits played a significant role in her transformation.

A Budget-Friendly Approach to Weight Loss

One of the standout aspects of Shikha’s journey is her focus on budget-friendly meals and home-cooked foods. She avoided expensive superfoods or supplements, proving that weight loss doesn’t need to burn a hole in your pocket.

Inspiration to Many

Shikha regularly shares her journey, recipes, and tips on her YouTube channel and Instagram profile, inspiring thousands of people who are struggling with weight loss. Her transparency, honesty, and focus on consistency make her story relatable and motivating.

The Takeaway

Shikha Singh’s story serves as a powerful reminder that weight loss isn’t about shortcuts—it’s about consistency, discipline, and a holistic approach to health. From her magical morning drink to her simple meal plans, every aspect of her routine is proof that sustainable weight loss is achievable for anyone willing to stay committed.
Her transformation isn’t just physical; it’s a celebration of resilience, self-love, and the power of a well-structured plan.

What is the mono diet? Benefits of this celebrity-endorsed trend https://www.india.com/health/what-is-the-mono-diet-benefits-of-this-celebrity-endorsed-trend-7494954/ Thu, 26 Dec 2024 11:37:09 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7494954 In a world where diet trends come and go, the monotrophic diet has emerged as a unique and simplified approach to eating, gaining attention from celebrities like Anushka Sharma and Victoria Beckham. Known for its minimalist approach, this diet focuses on consuming just one type of food or food group per meal or day. The idea is to reduce decision fatigue, simplify digestion, and allow the body to focus on absorbing maximum nutrients from a single source.

What is the monotrophic diet?

The monotrophic diet involves consuming one specific food per meal or day. For instance, you might eat just apples for breakfast, potatoes for lunch, and chicken for dinner. While this might seem extreme, advocates claim it gives the digestive system a break by focusing on breaking down one type of food at a time. The diet aims to reduce inflammation, improve gut health, and even aid in weight loss by controlling calorie intake naturally.

Why celebrities are embracing it

Anushka Sharma, known for her glowing skin and fit physique, reportedly incorporates elements of the monotrophic diet into her lifestyle. She is said to have followed a mono-meal plan, where she focused on consuming just one nutrient-rich food at a time to boost digestion and keep her energy levels high. Similarly, Victoria Beckham, celebrated for her disciplined approach to health and fitness, has been known to eat specific mono meals—often sticking to a plate of steamed vegetables or grilled fish—to maintain her lean figure and high energy levels.

Perks of the monotrophic diet

1. Improved digestion: Focusing on one food reduces strain on the digestive system, making nutrient absorption more efficient.
2 . Weight loss: Eating one type of food per meal naturally limits calorie intake and prevents overeating.
3 . Detoxification: Mono meals are often nutrient-dense and help flush toxins from the body.
4 . Simplified meal planning: With fewer decisions to make, the diet eliminates meal-time stress.
5. Better gut health: Digesting one type of food at a time reduces bloating and enhances gut efficiency.

Is it sustainable?

While the monotrophic diet offers benefits, experts suggest using it as a short-term reset rather than a long-term lifestyle. Prolonged reliance on one food type can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Nutritionists recommend incorporating a variety of mono meals throughout the day or using this diet as a periodic cleanse rather than a daily routine.
In conclusion, the monotrophic diet, backed by advocates like Anushka Sharma and Victoria Beckham, offers an intriguing approach to health and weight loss. However, like any diet, balance and moderation remain key to reaping its benefits safely.

Weight loss story: Woman reveals how she lost 63 kgs over the years by walking and mindful eating https://www.india.com/health/weight-loss-story-woman-reveals-how-she-lost-63-kgs-over-the-years-by-walking-and-mindful-eating-7491333/ Wed, 25 Dec 2024 05:35:56 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7491333 Weight loss isn’t just about shedding kilos—it’s about reclaiming health, confidence, and self-belief. For Niki Chawla, her transformation wasn’t sparked by a gym membership or a strict diet but by a moment of realization during a simple hike. In 2021, Niki attempted a modest 4km walk but was forced to stop halfway due to severe cramps in her legs. That day, she realised the toll an unhealthy lifestyle had taken on her body. Weighing heavily on her physically and emotionally, she decided it was time to change.

Over the next few years, Niki not only lost significant weight but also built a sustainable fitness routine centered around walking, strength training, and balanced eating. Her story isn’t about shortcuts or quick fixes—it’s about resilience, discipline, and small steps leading to big results. Here’s how Niki transformed herself, step by step, and how her journey became an inspiration for countless others.

The Beginning of the Journey

Like many others, Niki’s journey wasn’t smooth at the start. Walking even a kilometer would leave her in tears due to shin splints. Every step felt like a struggle, and exercise seemed more of a punishment than a path to better health. However, despite her discomfort, Niki didn’t give up. She held on to the small victories—like feeling energized after completing a walk—and used those moments as fuel to keep moving forward.

Finding Strength During Lockdown

The COVID-19 lockdown turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Niki. With more time on her hands and fewer external distractions, she decided to prioritize her health. She began walking regularly and started to see improvements, both physically and mentally. Walking became more than just exercise—it became her therapy.

Initially, Niki struggled with emotional eating. Stress would push her towards fast food—burgers, pizzas, and cakes provided temporary relief but prolonged guilt. Once she adopted regular exercise, she noticed a shift in her mindset. She learned to face her stress instead of using food as an escape.

Small Steps, Big Changes

Niki never opted for fad diets or extreme workout plans. Instead, she focused on balanced, homemade meals. She became mindful of her nutrition, ensuring her plate was filled with essential nutrients. Over time, her approach became more sustainable. Meal prepping on Sundays became her ritual, helping her stay consistent throughout the week.

Walking also became an essential part of her daily routine. Initially, she struggled to cover short distances, but within six months, she progressed from walking 200 meters to completing 10 kilometers daily.

Niki paired her walking sessions with simple strength training exercises at home. She also educated herself about calorie intake, nutrient balance, and portion control. Knowledge became her weapon, and discipline became her shield.

Sustainable Weight Loss

By 2022, Niki faced another challenge—the fear of regaining weight. She started skipping meals, replacing them with protein bars or fruit, thinking it would help. However, this left her feeling low on energy. Realizing her mistake, she returned to her structured meal plans and saw her energy levels rise again.

For Niki, fitness was about losing weight and building a healthier relationship with her body and food.

Achievements and Milestones

In 2023, Niki took her love for walking a step further by founding a hiking club. The group became a space for like-minded individuals to come together, explore nature, and motivate one another. Their monthly hikes became a source of joy, connection, and accountability.

By 2024, Niki had tracked over 1000 kilometers of walking and even completed distances of up to 30 kilometers in one stretch. Her dedication earned her a spot in the prestigious Chicago Marathon 2025—a dream she never thought she would achieve.

Reflections and Lessons Learned

Looking back, Niki shares that walking was the most therapeutic activity she ever embraced. She encourages everyone to start small, even if it’s just ten minutes a day, and gradually build up from there.

For Niki, fitness is no longer about achieving a certain weight or size—it’s about feeling good, being strong, and living life to the fullest.

She also reflects on her childhood struggles with bullying and body image issues. Despite being teased for her weight, Niki always knew her value wasn’t defined by her appearance.

Her story serves as a reminder that fitness is not about perfection but progress. It’s about embracing each step of the journey, no matter how slow, and finding joy in the process.

Today, Niki Chawla stands not just as a transformed individual but as an inspiration to anyone who feels stuck at the starting line of their fitness journey. Her message is simple yet powerful: Start small, stay consistent, and celebrate every victory along the way.

In an era where celebrity fitness transformations often become viral sensations, actor Ram Kapoor’s remarkable weight loss journey stands out as an inspiring tale of dedication and discipline. Known for his charismatic presence on both television and Bollywood screens, Ram Kapoor shifted the focus from his acting career to his incredible health transformation. Over time, he managed to shed an impressive 42 kilograms, proving that fitness is achievable with commitment, balance, and the right approach.

The Journey Towards Transformation

Ram Kapoor’s weight loss journey wasn’t an overnight success. It required consistent effort, patience, and a strong mindset. Recently, he shared glimpses of his journey on his Instagram account, where fans and fitness enthusiasts were left inspired by his dedication. Shedding 42 kilograms is no easy feat, especially for someone balancing a busy professional and personal life.
Ram’s transformation wasn’t just about physical change; it was about adopting a healthier lifestyle. Experts emphasize that weight loss is not just about looking good but also about feeling energetic, improving health markers, and maintaining mental well-being.

Key Factors Behind Ram Kapoor’s Weight Loss Success

1. Balanced Diet:

The foundation of Ram’s transformation was a well-balanced diet. He focused on consuming foods rich in fiber, vegetables, and protein while minimizing carbohydrates. Proper calorie control played a crucial role in helping him achieve his goal. According to experts, a balanced diet ensures sustainable weight loss and prevents nutritional deficiencies.

2. Regular Exercise:

Diet alone cannot drive significant weight loss without physical activity. Ram incorporated a mix of cardio, strength training, yoga, and meditation into his daily routine. Exercise not only helped him burn calories but also improved his strength, endurance, and mental health.

3. Hydration:

Water played a significant role in Ram’s weight loss journey. Drinking adequate water helps boost metabolism, control hunger, and prevent dehydration. Proper hydration also supports digestion and overall health.

4. Adequate Sleep:

One of the most overlooked aspects of weight loss is sleep. Ram ensured he got enough rest and quality sleep every night. Poor sleep patterns can disrupt hormones responsible for hunger and satiety, leading to increased cravings and overeating.

5. Mental Stability:

Weight loss is not just physical but also a mental challenge. Ram emphasized maintaining mental stability and balance throughout his journey. Stress and emotional eating can often derail fitness goals, and managing them is crucial for long-term success.

6. Patience and Consistency:

In today’s social media-driven world, quick fixes and fad diets dominate the narrative. However, Ram’s approach was patient and consistent. He understood that sustainable weight loss is a gradual process and focused on long-term results instead of temporary gains.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of Social Media Influence

In the age of instant gratification, many individuals fall into the trap of quick weight loss trends promoted on social media. Ram’s journey highlights the importance of avoiding unhealthy shortcuts and staying committed to proven methods. Experts advise against crash diets, excessive workouts, or dependency on supplements, as these can cause more harm than good.

Lessons to Learn from Ram Kapoor’s Journey

Ram Kapoor’s weight loss story teaches us that:
•Discipline outweighs motivation: Staying consistent every day is more important than relying on bursts of motivation.
•Health is a lifelong commitment: Sustainable habits are key to maintaining weight loss results.

Final Thoughts

Ram Kapoor’s journey is not just about physical transformation but also about self-belief, patience, and resilience. His story serves as a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with weight issues, reminding us that with determination, anything is possible.

Weight Loss Story: Woman shares how she lost 25 kilos with this simple workout https://www.india.com/health/weight-loss-story-woman-shares-how-she-lost-25-kilos-with-this-simple-workout-7487621/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 14:12:36 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7487621 In a world flooded with complex workout routines and trendy diets, finding a sustainable weight loss strategy can feel overwhelming. Neeta Tiwari, a certified nutritionist, offers a refreshing perspective on achieving long-term fitness goals. Her personal journey of shedding 25 kilograms, transitioning from 85 kg to 60 kg, highlights the importance of combining clean eating with smart, targeted workouts. This article explores the key takeaways from her experience, offering actionable insights for anyone looking to embark on their own fitness journey.

1. Clean Eating: The Foundation of Fitness

According to Neeta, weight loss isn’t just about rigorous exercise—it begins with mindful eating. Clean eating emphasizes consuming whole, unprocessed foods while avoiding refined sugars and unhealthy fats. This dietary approach ensures the body gets the essential nutrients it needs while keeping unnecessary calories at bay. Neeta emphasizes portion control and balanced meals rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats as the cornerstone of her diet plan.

2. Tailored Workouts: Know Your Body’s Needs

Neeta highlights the significance of selecting workouts that align with individual fitness levels. Different exercises target different muscle groups, and it’s essential not to neglect any area of the body. For beginners, jumping straight into high-intensity cardio can lead to exhaustion and burnout. Instead, starting with moderate exercises like step-ups, bench jumps, and lateral step-ups can build stamina and strength gradually.
•Bench Jump Over: A cardio-intensive exercise that enhances agility and core strength.
•Jumping Step-Ups: Improves lower body strength and cardiovascular fitness.
•Lateral Step-Ups: Enhances stability, balance, and side-to-side coordination.

3. Progression is Key

Weight loss isn’t an overnight success; it’s a gradual process. Neeta advises against rushing into advanced workouts without building foundational strength. For beginners, starting slow and progressing in intensity is essential. Workouts should evolve as the body becomes stronger, allowing for greater endurance and better results.

4. The Role of Consistency and Discipline

One of Neeta’s core principles is consistency. Regular workouts and mindful eating habits should become part of daily life rather than temporary measures. Skipping sessions or frequently indulging in cheat meals can slow down progress. Neeta suggests setting small, achievable goals to stay motivated and consistent.

5. Understanding Your Body’s Signals

Listening to your body is crucial. Overtraining or following intense workout regimens without proper rest can lead to injuries and fatigue. Neeta advises paying attention to energy levels, soreness, and recovery time to ensure long-term sustainability.

6. Mindset Matters

Losing weight isn’t just a physical transformation—it’s equally mental. Maintaining a positive mindset, celebrating small milestones, and not being overly critical of setbacks are vital for success. Neeta stresses the importance of self-compassion during the fitness journey.

7. Small Steps Lead to Big Changes

Neeta’s journey underscores the power of small, consistent changes. Whether it’s swapping unhealthy snacks for nutritious alternatives or dedicating 30 minutes a day to exercise, every effort adds up.
In conclusion, Neeta Tiwari’s journey is a testament to the fact that sustainable weight loss is achievable through clean eating, targeted exercises, and a disciplined mindset. Her approach serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to prioritize health and well-being in their lives. As Neeta puts it, “Losing weight isn’t that hard if you just know the right things to do.”

Can diabetes put you at early risk of dementia? https://www.india.com/health/can-diabetes-put-you-at-early-risk-of-dementia-7487285/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 11:37:06 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7487285 Brains of people with high glucose levels and inflammation can age faster, increasing their risk of developing dementia, according to a study. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden used an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to analyse brain images from 739 cognitively healthy people aged 70-years to explore the brain’s biological age.

They found various risk and health factors that determine the speed at which the brain ages.

The study, presented in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, showed that diabetes, stroke, cerebral small vessel disease, and inflammation were linked to brains with an older appearance,

On the other hand, healthy lifestyles involving regular exercise were linked to brains with a younger appearance, the study added.

The team conducted MRI scans of the participant’s brains and then estimated the age of the resulting brain images using their AI-based algorithm. Further, blood samples were taken for measuring lipids, glucose, and inflammation; and their cognitive abilities were also tested.

The AI tool estimated the brain age for both sexes to be on average 71 years. The researchers then looked at the ”brain age gap” by subtracting the participants’ estimated biological brain age from their chronological age.

“A take-home from the study is that factors that adversely affect the blood vessels can also be related to older-looking brains,” said lead author Anna Marseglia, a researcher at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet.

This “shows how important it is to keep your blood vessels healthy, to protect your brain, by making sure, for instance, that your blood glucose level is kept stable,” Marseglia added.

The team next aims to launch a study to understand how women and men may differ in how they build resilience,

What is water intoxication? 5 warning signs of drinking too much water https://www.india.com/health/what-is-water-intoxication-5-warning-signs-of-drinking-too-much-water-7486748/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 09:17:35 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7486748 Every time, people are mostly advised to drink suffice water everyday, it is essential to keep the body hydrated etc. But how many times have you heard people being over hydrated? Hardly. But is does happen. There are side effects of drinking too much of water. And that is known as water intoxication.

Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning or hyperhydration, occurs when an individual consumes an excessive amount of water in a short period, leading to an electrolyte imbalance in the body. This condition can disrupt normal physiological functions and potentially become life-threatening. While staying hydrated is essential for health, it’s crucial to understand the risks associated with overconsumption of water.

5 Warning Signs of Water Intoxication

  1. Nausea and Vomiting: One of the first symptoms of water intoxication is nausea, which can progress to vomiting. When the body takes in more water than it can process, the excess fluid can cause the stomach to feel bloated and uncomfortable. This discomfort may lead to nausea and, eventually, vomiting as the body attempts to expel the excess water.
  2. Headaches: Frequent headaches can also be a sign of water intoxication. As the body’s electrolyte levels become imbalanced due to excessive water intake, the brain may temporarily swell, leading to pressure that manifests as a headache.
  3. Confusion and Disorientation: Cognitive symptoms, such as confusion and disorientation, may arise as a result of water intoxication. The imbalance of electrolytes, particularly sodium, can affect brain function. This disruption can lead to mental fog, difficulty concentrating, and in severe cases, even seizures.
  4. Swelling and Puffiness: Excessive water intake can cause the body to retain fluid, leading to noticeable swelling and puffiness, particularly in the hands, feet, and face. This condition, known as edema, occurs when water accumulates in the tissues.
  5. Muscle Weakness or Cramps: Muscle weakness or cramps can also indicate water intoxication. The dilution of sodium in the body can lead to hyponatremia, a condition where sodium levels drop too low. This electrolyte imbalance can cause muscle spasms, weakness, and in severe cases, can affect heart function. If you experience unexplained muscle issues after consuming large amounts of water, it may warrant immediate attention.

While staying hydrated is vital for health, it’s important to be mindful of the amount of water you consume. Water intoxication can lead to serious health complications if not addressed promptly. If you notice any of the above warning signs, consider reducing your water intake and consulting a healthcare professional. Aim for a balanced approach to hydration, listening to your body’s needs, and adjusting your fluid intake accordingly to maintain optimal health.

Joint pain in winter: 5 essential tips to manage bone health in elderly https://www.india.com/health/joint-pain-in-winter-5-essential-tips-to-manage-bone-health-in-elderly-7483200/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 11:48:35 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7483200 As the winter season has arrived, senior citizens or the older population should prioritise their bone health to combat the potential challenges faced during colder weather. Ensuring stronger bones is crucial as age progresses. One of the fundamental elements for maintaining bone health is a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is a critical mineral that helps build and maintain strong bones. For seniors, adequate calcium intake can significantly reduce the risk of osteoporosis – a condition that weakens the bones and makes them susceptible to fractures.

Vitamin D is vital for bone health, as it facilitates calcium absorption. An excellent source of vitamin D is the sunlight. Many seniors face challenges in obtaining sufficient vitamin D due to limited sunlight exposure during winter. The recommended daily calcium requirement for seniors is about 1200 mcg, and vitamin D is 800 IU, said Dr Rajesh Srinivas, Consultant – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manipal Hospital Varthur Road and Whitefield.

5 Tips For Strong Bones

  1. Calcium Diet: Excellent dietary sources of calcium products are milk, yogurts, and cheese. However, for those who are lactose intolerant or prefer non-dietary options include fortified foods such as almond milk, soy milk, cereals, and pulses such as boiled chickpeas, soya beans, chia seeds, rajma, green grams, and Bengal grams.
  2. Leafy Green: Leafy greens such as kale, broccoli, okra, spinach, sprouts, and beans also contribute to the overall calcium intake, making them a healthy addition to the winter diet.
  3. Supplements: Seniors struggling to achieve sufficient calcium and vitamin D through diet alone should consider supplementation with elemental calcium and vitamin D3 to help meet daily nutrient requirements. The supplementation of elemental calcium, along with additional supplements of magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron, may be taken as a daily dose. Vitamin D3 supplements can be taken once a week, as recommended by your doctor. Elemental calcium, enriched with magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron supplements could be considered as daily once dosage, vitamin D3 supplementation with weekly once dosage, or as prescribed by your doctor.
  4. Weight bearing exercises: In addition to diet, physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining bone strength. Weight-bearing exercises, including walking and light resistance training, can enhance bone strength and improve balance, reducing the risks of falls.
  5. Yoga: Simple activities like yoga also help enhance the flexibility and strength of joints.

During winter seasons, the senior population should focus on a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D to support bone health by incorporating dairy products, fortified foods, green leafy vegetables, and fish into meals alongside considering supplementation as prescribed by a doctor and engage in physical activity to increase strength and flexibility of bones and joints. Always consult your healthcare professional if you have concerns about your health, joints, and bone status.

A Complete Guide to Porting Your Health Insurance Policy https://www.india.com/health/a-complete-guide-to-porting-your-health-insurance-policy-7479084/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 15:18:00 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7479084 Public health has traditionally been well served by the Medicare system, but health insurance has been a crucial element of personal finance to address the financial woes during a hospitalisation. However, depending on one’s changing needs over a period of time, the kind of health insurance plan that one chooses might not meet one’s needs. Now, this is where health insurance porting can come in handy to an individual. Porting simply means moving your health insurance policy from one insurance company to another, and while doing so, you can retain the benefits gained from your previous insurer, which will include waiting periods, no-claim bonuses, and coverage limits.

In this guide, we will explain every detail of porting your health insurance policy, why you need to port, the process for doing it, and some key things to consider when choosing health coverage for you and your family during the process.

This can also have the following benefits, especially if you are an unhappy camper with your current health insurance firm in terms of services offered, premiums charged or available plans. Below are some key reasons why porting may be a good idea:

1. Better Coverage Options
Over the years, you might find that your healthcare needs need more attention which your current plan is not able to provide with, this is where an entirely different policy might help. Policy portability enables you to seek a new health insurance policy that will suit your current needs. Like, if you have added members to your family or if you previously didn’t need maternity or critical illness coverage, porting to a plan where these additional add-ons come for affordable premiums might help. You can opt from the various health insurance plans for family available to meet your needs.

2. Improved Customer Service
Many people pay little attention to customer service when choosing their insurance company, but this can help a lot in long run. In general, the portability option enables the customer to switch to a provider with enhanced and efficient customer support system, in case the existing company is not satisfactory in terms of handling claims. Some of the modern insurers are directing their efforts in the fast and efficient approval and claims handling process as this aspect makes the whole process easier.

3. Cost-Effective Premiums
Your current insurer might have hiked the premium rates, or you may consider that the premium you are paying is not worth the coverage you receive. This might be a reason enough to port and you can still retain your benefits while transferring to an insurer that offers you affordable premiums for better coverage.

4. Retain No Claim Bonus (NCB)
A no-claim bonus (NCB) is a discount that comes from the fact that no claims have been made during the policy year, and this bonus usually continues to be earned. In porting your health insurance, the NCB can be retained and thus, when you wish to either bring down your premium rates or wish to enhance your coverage without incurring any added cost, it can be done. This helps to make sure that you’re not stripped of the bonuses achieved because you are a claim-free driver.

5. Pre-existing Condition Benefits
Also, portability can sometimes be used to cut down on the waiting period for pre-existing conditions, if the new insurance provider you are choosing has a shorter waiting period for your condition. You should know that when changing insurance companies, some of them may look at the previous insurance company’s record. If you completed a particular period with them regarding your pre-existing conditions, your new insurer may consider the same waiting period and start off for the remaining days.

On the Health Insurance Portability: Process

Switching health plans is easy, but you need some planning when you want to port your health insurance. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:

Step 1: Assess the existing Health Insurance policy

Before making porting, it is necessary to study your current health insurance policy in detail. Discover what type of coverage you have, for how much, and what it is providing you. This is important as it will assist you to make a decision on what you expect from a new policy like; enhanced family health insurance or a lower policy rate.

Step 2: Differences Between Insurance and Health Plans in Various Insurance Companies

The final decision is to get on your policy and find better offers that you can switch to. It also approves different kinds of health insurance plans offered by different insurance companies.

Step 3: Notify Your Existing Insurer

You are required to give your existing insurer a notice of your intention to port the policy at least 45 days before the renewal date of the particular policy. This is because it’s enough time for the new insurer to receive your request and the prior insurer to forward your policy details to the new insurer. This notification should be in writing most preferably in an email or a letter.

Step 4: File for Porting to another Company

Once you’ve selected your new insurer, apply for porting by submitting the necessary documents, including:

Proposal form
Existing policy details (premium, coverage, NCB, etc.)
Medical history (if required)
Any other documents requested by the insurer
Your new insurer will assess the documents and provide you with a porting request, which includes details of your coverage options, premiums, and terms. If your current insurer has any restrictions or exclusions, the new insurer will inform you about these.

Step 5: Undergo Medical Tests (if Required)
The insurer may ask you to undergo a medical test depending on your age, medical history and company requirements. These results are then used by the new insurer to determine if you are at a risk which will result in a premium. The insurer may test all family members above a certain age for health insurance plans for families.

Step 6: Get the approval on the Porting Request

It takes a while (on average 15 days) once you make a request for porting to the new insurer to review. They’ll approve your request if everything is in order and your policy will be ported. If they can’t answer anything immediately, they will inform you if there are any issues or if they need anything else.

Step 7: Receive Your New Policy and Confirm the Continuity of Benefits

After you’ve applied for your porting request and gotten approval, you’ll get your new health insurance policy. Make sure the new policy contains everything that you get in the old one like the waiting period for pre-existing conditions and the No Claim Bonus (NCB). You will maintain our continuity benefits, and you can continue to use the new health insurance plan without interruption.

Conclusion

Here are five compelling reasons to enjoy dates during this season:

5 Benefits of Dates in Winter

  1. Nutrient-Rich Energy Boost: Dates are packed with essential nutrients, making them an excellent source of energy. They are rich in natural sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose, providing a quick energy boost during the cold winter months when the body requires more fuel to maintain warmth. Additionally, dates are high in fiber, which aids digestion and helps keep you feeling full longer.
  2. Rich in Antioxidants: Winter can bring about a range of health issues, including colds and flu. Dates are rich in antioxidants, such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acid, which help combat oxidative stress in the body. These antioxidants can strengthen the immune system, making it easier to fend off seasonal illnesses.
  3. Warmth and Comfort: In many cultures, dates are often used in traditional winter recipes, contributing to warmth and comfort during colder months. They can be enjoyed in various forms, such as in warm desserts, milkshakes, or added to spicy curries, enhancing both flavor and nutritional value.
  4. Bone Health: Winter is a time when people often experience joint stiffness and discomfort. Dates are a good source of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which are essential for maintaining strong bones and preventing conditions like osteoporosis. Incorporating dates into your diet can support overall bone health during these colder months.
  5. Natural Sweetener for Healthy Treats: With many people seeking to indulge in sweets during the festive winter season, dates serve as a healthier alternative to refined sugars. They can be used as a natural sweetener in various recipes, from energy bars to desserts, allowing you to satisfy your sweet tooth without compromising on health.

Khajoor is not just a delicious winter treat; it offers numerous health benefits that make it a perfect addition to your seasonal diet. By incorporating dates into your meals and snacks, you can enjoy their rich flavor while reaping the nutritional rewards throughout the chilly months.
